MLB – Tigers Win in 11
Ian Kinsler’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals Saturday. Detroit starter Matt Boyd turned in six solid innings, giving up just two runs. Game details are here.

The Cincinnati Reds rallied for three runs in the eighth inning, and beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-7 Saturday. During that rally, Milwaukee third baseman Elian Herrera and left fielder Shane Peterson collided while chasing a fly ball. Both left the game, but x-rays revealed no broken bones. The Brewers wrap up that home set against the Cincinnati Reds this afternoon. Ariel Pena will pitch against Anthony DeSclafani.
High School
In high school football Saturday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell powered its way to a 55-0 halftime lead, and cruised past the Gogebic Miners 62-26. The Lakes remain unbeaten.
– Ewen-Trout Creek lost to North Central 76-16.
In high school volleyball Saturday, Lake Linden-Hubbell reached the semifinals at the Forest Park Invitational, where they lost to Stephenson 2-0.
At the CSDHL Showcase in Chicago, the Team Copper Country U18 hockey squad defeated the Rockford Illinois Iceman 5-3 on Saturday, Teddy Randell had a hat trick, and Reid Pietila and Rory Anderson also scored. Dawson Kero got the win. Team CC then skated to a 2-2 tie with the Affton team from St. Louis, Missouri. Dylan Paavola, and Danny Hill scored, Ian Carroll was in net. Team CC plays one final game in Chicago this morning.
MTU
David Walter and Alex Sherbinow each scored two touchdowns, as the Michigan Tech football team defeated Saginaw Valley State University 35-21 Saturday. The Huskies trailed by a point going into the fourth quarter, but scored two unanswered touchdowns to earn their first victory at University Center since 1995. John Williams rushed for 84 yards on 18 carries. Brandon Cowie completed 14 of 22 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Details are here.
The MTU volleyball team is off to the best start in school history, following Saturday’s 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) victory over Northwood. Details are here. Tech is 10-0 on the season.
The MTU women’s tennis team lost 9-0 at Northwood Saturday afternoon. Details are here. The Huskies play at Saginaw Valley State this morning.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team celebrated Homecoming with a 32-24 victory over Hillsdale Saturday afternoon. L’Anse’s Ryan La Berge kicked four field goals. Details are here.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University football team lost 66-3 to top-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday afternoon. The Lions did score the first points in program history when Gabe Swanson kicked a 20-yard field goal late in the first half. Finlandia quarterback Ronald Brown completed 11 of 17 passes for 64 yards. Details are here.
On Saturday in Grand Rapids, the Finlandia University volleyball team lost to Grace Bible College 3-0. The result of the Lions’ game against Moody Bible Institute was not reported.
The Finlandia women’s soccer team lost to Grace Bible College 7-0 Saturday. The Lions were outshot 36-2. The Finlandia men’s team will host Robert Morris-Lake County today at 3:30. The women’s game scheduled for Sunday against RMLC has been canceled.
NFL
The Detroit Lions play at Minnesota this afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00.

Packers right tackle Bryan Bulaga underwent knee surgery yesterday. He was injured during practice a few days earlier. He will probably miss six weeks.
