In boys high school basketball last night…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell improved to 10-0 with a 76-73 double-overtime victory over Ewen-Trout Creek. Arthur Lyons scored 39 points for the Lakes, and Dayne Matson added 16. Jack Boro led the Panthers with 19 points, and Jake Witt scored 15. The win gives the Lakes sole possession of first place in the Copper Mountain Conference, with a league mark of 8-0. The Panthers slip to 6-1 in the conference, and 8-2 overall.
– Houghton dumped Ontonagon 49-27.
– Calumet beat Jeffers 51-36.
– Hancock got past West Iron County 45-35.
– Chassell defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 79-45. Abe Gockenbach scored 18 for the Panthers.
– Baraga fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 65-58. Brandan Varline scored 28 for the Vikings.
In last night’s only girls game, L’Anse stopped Wakefield-Marenisco 74-39. Bailey Froberg scored 27 points for the Purple Hornets.
In high school hockey last night…
– Calumet ripped Negaunee 14-2 in a game that ended after two periods because of the mercy rule. Dylan Boberg had a hat trick for the Copper Kings. Izaak Avery and Rory Anderson each scored twice. See video highlights here.
– Houghton edged Kingsford 2-1.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons will host the Philadelphia 76ers tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Winter Carnival Ice Fishing Contest Planned
The Winter Carnival Ice Fishing Contest will be held Saturday on Chassell Bay. Fishing will be open between 8:00 and 4:00. Weigh-ins will take place at the Sigma Rho Fraternity on US-41 in Chassell. The cost is $10.00 per person. You must register before 4:00 on Friday, January 29th. Registration forms are available at the Sigma Rho house, and at several area businesses, including Swift Hardware in Houghton.
