Lakes Remain Unbeaten – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Calumet fell behind 3-0, then rallied to beat Escanaba 4-3 in overtime. Tyler Loukus tied it with his second goal of the game in the final minute, and Ryan Nelson scored the game-winner.
– Hancock blanked Negaunee 7-0. Zach Ahola and Matt Sanregret each scored twice for the Bulldogs, who outshot the Miners 64-22.

All of our area hockey teams are off this weekend.

Lake Linden Hubbell LogoIn boys’ high school basketball last night…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten by beating Baraga 85-50. Brett Poissant led all scorers with 28 points for the Lakes. Brendan Varline scored 20 for the Vikings. The Lakes are tied with Republic-Michigamme for first place in the Copper Country Conference.
– Calumet defeated Hancock 51-32.
– Jeffers got past Ontonagon 34-28.
– Chassell fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 85-54.

– WestPAC leader Houghton entertains West Iron County.
– Hancock visits Chassell.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell journeys to Ontonagon.
– Jeffers plays at Baraga.

In Great Lakes Hockey League action, the Portage Lake Pioneers visit the Mosinee Papermakers tonight, and the Monroe Blues tomorrow night. The Calumet Wolverines have the weekend off.

MTU Hoops Sweep Hillsdale
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams claimed victories at Hillsdale College last night. The 19th-ranked women’s squad trailed by five at halftime, but rode a hot second half to a 64-57 win. Final-minute free throws by Morgan Anderson and Jillian Richie turned a three-point lead into the final seven-point margin. Kelli Guy led the Huskies with 18.

The men’s team rode a strong first half to a 78-67 victory over the Chargers. Ben Stelzer scored 19 for the Huskies, who led by 11 at halftime.

Both Huskies teams play at Saginaw Valley State tomorrow afternoon.

The Michigan Tech hockey team hosts Alaska tonight and tomorrow night. Face-offs are at 7:07 at MacInnes Arena.

NMU Basketball Splits at SVSU
Alyssa Colla scored 21 points, as the Northern Michigan University women’s team defeated Saginaw Valley State 62-46 last night. The Wildcats men’s team dropped a 65-43 decision at University Center. Both Wildcats teams visit Hillsdale tomorrow.

The NMU hockey team skates at Penn State tonight and tomorrow night. Assistant coaches Rob Lehtinen and John Kyle will run the Wildcats team. There’s still no word from the University as to why head coach Walt Kyle was placed on administrative leave earlier this week. Associate athletic director Bridget Berube Carter was also placed on administrative leave.

Finlandia Lions New LogoFinlandia Men Welcome Adrian
The Finlandia men’s hockey team hosts Adrian College for games at 7:15 tonight and 4:00 tomorrow afternoon at the Houghton County Arena. The Finlandia women’s team skates at Adrian tonight and tomorrow.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team plays at Maranatha Baptist Bible University tomorrow afternoon.

NHL – Red Wings
After the All-Star break, the Red Wings will return to action Tuesday at Carolina. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Prepare for Bucks
The Pistons play at Milwaukee tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
