Lakes Open Regional Tourney – Monday Sports Wrap

The Houghton hockey team fell to Cranbrook 4-0 in the Division Three state title game Saturday afternoon in Plymouth. The Cranes scored three times in the first nine minutes, and outshot the Gremlins 50-13. On Friday, the Gremlins got off to a quick start, and defeated Flint Powers Catholic 4-1 in the semifinals.

Congratulations to local players who were named to the Division Three All-State Team. Among forwards, Reid Pietila from Houghton and Hunter Kero from Hancock were named to the first team. Houghton’s Cale Markham and Jon Bostwick and Hancock’s Zachary Ahola were named to the second team, and Calumet’s Robert Erkkila was an honorable mention. Among defenseman, Houghton’s Tristan Foltz made the first team, Hancock’s Jack Fenton made the second team, and Dylan Paavola of the Bulldogs was an honorable mention. Marcus Gloss of Houghton was named a first team goalie, and Dawson Kero of Hancock earned honorable mention. See all of the All-State honorees here.

LLH BBB 2015-03-13In the boys’ Class D high school basketball District championship game at Ontonagon Friday night, Lake Linden-Hubbell held off a stubborn Jeffers squad, and advanced to the Regional semifinal with a 46-31 victory. The Lakes will face Forest Park tonight at 6:00 at Negaunee. Our pregame coverage begins around 5:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear 102.com. Munising and North Central will play in the other Regional semifinal.

MTU Huskies LogoThe second-seeded MTU hockey team advanced to the WCHA Final Five tournament with a 3-0 victory over Alabama-Huntsville Saturday night. Blake Hietala’s power play goal in the first period was all the Huskies needed. Tanner Kero added a goal in the second period, and Mark Auk netted an insurance tally in the third. Jamie Phillips made 18 saves. The Huskies opened the WCHA tournament with the longest game in school history Friday night. Tyler Heinonen’s goal with 71 seconds remaining in the third overtime period finally gave the Huskies a 1-0 victory. Tech will face Bowling Green Friday night in St. Paul.

The Falcons advanced by sweeping Northern Michigan with a 4-1 victory on Saturday, and a 3-2 overtime win on Friday.

The MTU women’s basketball team ended its NCAA tournament run with a stunning 70-51 loss to Ashland in the Regional semifinals on Saturday. The Huskies trailed 49-19 at halftime. Danielle Blake led Tech with 22 points. MTU ends its season with a record of 28-3. The Huskies won the GLIAC regular season and tournament titles.

Ashland will face Lewis in the title game tonight at 7:00 at the SDC.

The Tech men’s team fell 74-53 to Indianapolis in the opening round of the NCAA tournament at Bellarmine University in Louisville Saturday. Ben Stelzer finished his college career with 21 points, but the rest of the starting lineup combined for just 17. The Huskies wrap up the season with a record of 19-9.

NHL – Red Wings Pound Penguins
The Detroit Red Wings broke out of their doldrums, and clobbered the Penguins 5-1 yesterday. Teemu Pulkkinen scored twice for Detroit, and Petr Mrazek made 42 saves to earn the win. The Wings are off until Thursday, when they visit the Panthers. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Prepare for Memphis
The Detroit Pistons host the Grizzlies tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Alfredo Simon gave up three runs over four innings, and the Tigers fell to the Marlins 4-2 yesterday. The Tigers face the Cardinals this afternoon. David Price will start.

Kyle Lohse pitched into the fifth inning as half of the Brewers lost to the Athletics 5-2 yesterday. Jonathan Lucroy homered. Carlos Gomez homered, as the other half of the Brewers dropped a 12-5 decision to the Rangers. The Brewers have today off, and play the Padres tomorrow.
