Lakes, Hornets, Kings and Gremlins Advance to Volleyball Finals – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In the district semifinals of the high school volleyball tournament last night…
– Division Four District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Baraga 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, and 25-19). L’Anse blanked Chassell 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-14). Haley Nankervis had 18 digs, 14 service points and 11 kills while Summer Dudo had 25 assists for L’Anse. The Purple Hornets will face the Lakes for the district title tonight at 7:00 at Lake Linden.
– Division Four District 97 at Watersmeet, Jeffers dropped a hard-fought 3-2 match to Wakefield-Marenisco. Ewen-Trout Creek shut out Bessemer 3-0. The Cardinals and Panthers will play for the district title tonight at Watersmeet.
– Division Three District 65 at Norway, Calumet eliminated Iron Mountain 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-10, 25-17). Norway swept West Iron County 3-0. The Copper Kings will meet the Knights for the district crown tonight in Norway.
– Division Two District 33, Houghton got past Escanaba 3-2. Gladstone eliminated Kingsford 3-1. The Gremlins and Flivvers will play for the district title tomorrow night in Kingsford.

MTU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team plays an exhibition match at Eastern Michigan University tonight. The Huskies men’s squad plays an exhibition at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost to the Brooklyn Nets 120-119 in overtime last night. Former Piston Spencer Dinwiddie hit a three-pointer with seven second remaining to win the game for Brooklyn. Blake Griffin led Detroit with 25 points, and Andre Drummond collected 23 rebounds. The Pistons have lost three straight, and will visit the Philadelphia 76ers Saturday afternoon. NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the New Jersey Devils tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.

The Wings will play without Thomas Vanek for the next two or three weeks. He’s out with a lower body injury. Wade Megan has been called up from Grand Rapids to fill in.

Former Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Bob Skoronski has died. Skoronski played for all of Vince Lombardi’s teams, and was the offensive team captain for five seasons. He was 84.

MLB
Jeremy Jeffress will be back with the Milwaukee Brewers next season. The team exercised its option to extend his contract yesterday. Jeffress and the other pitchers will have a new mentor next year. Pitching coach Derek Johnson resigned yesterday. He’ll become the pitching coach for the Cincinnati Reds.

The Calumet Copper Kings will face Traverse City St. Francis Saturday at 1:00 in the Division Six district football final. The game will be played at Thirlby Field in Traverse City. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:35 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Finlandia University soccer teams will host the ACAA Tourney this weekend at McAfee Field. The women face Thomas More University in the semifinals Saturday at 10:00. The men will face Thomas More Saturday at 4:00. We’ll cover both semifinal games on 99.3 The Lift and TheLift.com, along with the championship games on Sunday, if the Lions advance.
