High School
In high school baseball yesterday, Calumet won the local Division Three district title, defeating Iron Mountain 6-2 in the championship game. The Copper Kings had advanced with a 5-2 win over Negaunee in the semifinal. The Mountaineers eliminated Houghton 7-3 in the other semifinal. Calumet will take on Traverse City St. Francis Saturday at 10:00 in Charlevoix. Gladstone and Boyne City will meet in the other regional semifinal. Our broadcast coverage will begin around 9:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
Negaunee dominated the Division Three softball tournament yesterday, blanking Calumet 10-0 in the semifinal, and defeating Houghton 16-6 in the championship match. Both games ended after six innings because of the mercy rule. Houghton reached the final by edging Westwood 4-3 in the other semifinal.

– Lake Linden-Hubbell won the Division Three girls meet for the second straight year, easily outdistancing runner-up North Dickinson. Ontonagon finished eighth, Chassell ninth, and Baraga and Ewen-Trout Creek tied for 18th. The Lakes’ 4×200-meter and 4×400-meter relay teams took first place. Jamie Hendrickson won the high jump, Laura Lyons won the long jump, and MacKenzie LePage won the pole vault. The Chassell 4×800-meter relay team took first place. Ontonagon’s Faren Kohlpak won the 400-meter run, and Holly Jo Wardynski won the shot put. See full Division Three girls results here.
– In the Division Three boys meet, Ontonagon finished 11th, and Lake Linden-Hubbell 13th. Chassell and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tied for 14th, and Baraga placed 16th. See full Division Three boys results here.

– Houghton finished second to Marquette in the Division One boys meet. Clayton Sayen won the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter runs. Calumet finished eighth in the team standings, with Cooper Twardzik winning the shot put and discus throw. See full Division One boys results here.

The Detroit Tigers scored three runs in the eighth inning, and defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 7-4 yesterday. John Hicks’ bases-loaded single drove home two runs to break a 4-4 tie. JaCoby Jones’ sacrifice fly added an insurance run. Jeimer Candelario homered in the first inning. He has reached base in 27 consecutive games – the longest such streak in the majors. Matthew Boyd gave up four runs over seven innings. Louis Coleman got the win in relief.
The Tigers have won four in a row, and eight of their last 10, and entertain the Blue Jays again this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will start against Aaron Sanchez. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers blanked the White Sox in Chicago 5-0 yesterday. All of the Brewers’ scoring came on home runs – solo shots by Erik Kratz, Jonathan Villar and Lorenzo Cain, and a two-run blow by Jesús Aguilar. Jhoulys Chacín gave up three hits before leaving in the sixth inning. Josh Hader and Taylor Williams completed the shutout.
The Brewers play at Chicago again today. Brent Suter will pitch against Dylan Covey.
NHL
The Capitals defeated the Golden Knights 3-1 last night. Washington leads the Stanley Cup playoff two games to one. Game four will be played in Washington tomorrow.
NBA
Game two of the NBA Championship Series will be played tonight in Oakland. The Warriors lead the Cavaliers 1-0.
