Lakes’ Football Season Ends – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Lake Linden-Hubbell’s football season ended Saturday with an 8-0 loss to Forest Park in the Eight Player Division Two regional semifinals. The Lakes opened the game without starting quarterback Danny Marcotte and James Milkey, Backup quarterback Travis Ongie was forced from the game in the first half with an injury. Defense prevailed for both teams until midway through the second half, when the Trojans mounted a 14-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a six-yard Sam McKissack touchdown run, and a successful two-point conversion. Lake Linden closes its season with a record of 7-3. The Trojans advance to face North Central in the regional final next weekend. The Jets eliminated Pellston 64-14 Saturday in the other regional semifinal.

After the opening weekend of football tournament play, in 11-player district semifinals…
• In Division Six, Calumet defeated Menominee 35-20 Friday night. Negaunee dispatched Gladstone 42-28 in the other district semifinal. The Copper Kings will face the Miners for the district title next weekend in Negaunee. Hear the broadcast on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• In Division Three, Marquette lost 37-6 Friday night at Mount Pleasant.
• In Division Five, Kingsford fell 28-10 Friday night at Kingsley.
• In Division Seven, Westwood routed East Jordan 44-6 Saturday. The Patriots will face Charlevoix, which defeated Mancelona 50-8 Friday night.
• In Division Eight, Bark River-Harris lost 36-0 at Beal City Saturday. Iron Mountain eliminated Frankfort 35-7 Saturday. The Mountaineers will play at Beal City next weekend.
• In Eight Player Division One, Rudyard eliminated Munising 38-14 Friday night. Newberry defeated Pickford 32-14 Friday. The Bulldogs and Indians will play for the regional title next weekend.

College Football

A late Michigan Tech comeback fell short, as the Huskies football team fell at 7th-ranked Grand Valley State 14-9 Saturday. After spotting the Lakers a 14-0 halftime lead, the Huskies got a field goal from Drew Wyble and a touchdown pass from Will Ark to Justin Davis to make the game close.

The NMU football team lost 44-24 at top-ranked Ferris State Saturday.

The Finlandia University football team dropped a 42-32 decision at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, Saturday. Despite the loss, the Lions set eight school records. Byron Owens returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown – the first time a kickoff or punt has been returned for a score in school history. Quarterback Fernando Monroe also connected with Owens for a 94-yard touchdown pass – the longest in school history. Owens caught seven catches for 251 yards, and returned three kickoffs for 146 yards, setting school records for receiving yards and all-purpose yards. Monroe passed for 328 yards, setting individual and team marks. Monroe also set a school record 314 yards in total offense. Finlandia’s defense recorded a team-record 63 solo tackles.

College Hockey

The 18th-ranked Tech hockey team fell 2-1 at Clarkson Saturday night, and settled for a split in their weekend series. Brian Halonen scored the Huskies’ only goal. Blake Pietila took the loss in net, in a defensive battle which saw the Huskies outshoot the Golden Knights 21-13.

The Northern hockey team lost 7-0 at third-ranked Minnesota State Saturday night.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to Saint Catherine Saturday. The Lions were outshot 34-9.

The Finlandia men’s team lost 4-1 to Wisconsin-River Falls Saturday. Phil Schader netted the Lions’ only goal. Connor Duffy made 28 saves. 

College Soccer

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 3-1 victory at Mills College Saturday. Julissa Barrera, Marissa Schilling and Ally Herrick scored for the Lions. Finlandia will begin play Thursday at the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference tournament in Salisbury, Maryland. The tournament schedule will be released on Monday.

The MTU soccer team hosts Saginaw Valley State today at noon.

College Volleyball

The 20th-ranked Michigan Tech volleyball team swept Northern Michigan 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-16) Saturday. Anna Jonynas led the Huskies with 12 kills. Laura De Marchi had 33 assists, and Carissa Beyer recorded 10 digs.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 5-4 to the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night. Filip Zadina scored early for Detroit, as the Leafs built a two-goal lead. The teams swapped scored through the third period, with Joe Valeno and Vladislav Namestnikov finding the net, and Filip Hronek pulling Detroit within one in the closing seconds.

The Wings visit the Montreal Canadiens Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons earned their first win of the season Saturday night, downing the Orlando Magic 110-103. Jerami Grant led Detroit with 22 points. Top draft pick Cade Cunningham made his season debut. He scores two points in 19 minutes, as he continues his recovery from a sprained ankle.

The Pistons visit the Brooklyn Nets tonight.

MLB

The Atlanta Braves edged the Houston Astros 3-2 Saturday night. The Braves lead the World Series 3-1, with game five set for tonight in Atlanta.

NFL

Today, the Detroit Lions host the Philadelphia Eagles in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
