Lakes Football Advances to State Semifinals – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Lake Linden-Hubbell ousted three-time defending state champion North Central in an Eight Player Division Two football regional final 37-18 Saturday. Danny Marcotte ran for one touchdown, and threw three scoring passes – two to Matthew Jokela. Jokela returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and kicked a field goal. Marcotte led the Lakes with 97 yards rushing. The Lakes will travel seven hours downstate to play Marion in the semifinals next week. Deckerville and Adrian Lenawee Christian will meet in the other semifinal.

In other playoff football games involving Upper Peninsula teams…
• In Eight Player Division One, Pickford dispatched Norway 34-16 Saturday. The Panthers will meet Inland Lakes in the semifinals next week.
• In Division Eight, Iron Mountain defeated Ishpeming 40-16 Friday night to win their district title. The Mountaineers will play at Beal City next weekend.
• In Division Seven, Menominee pounded Charlevoix 50-14 for a district title Saturday afternoon. The Maroons will host McBain next weekend.
• In Division Six, Gladstone claimed a district title with a 28-14 win over Negaunee Friday. The Braves will play at Kingsley next weekend.
• In Division Five, Kingsford got past Ogemaw Heights 19-14 Saturday. The Flivvers will play at Frankenmuth next weekend.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team eked out a 4-3 overtime victory over Augustana Saturday night. Isaac Gordon gave the Huskies an early advantage with his fourth goal of the weekend. The Vikings scored late in the first period and midway through the second to take the lead. Ryland Mosely’s power play tally early in the third period tied the game, but the Vikings reclaimed the lead with four-and-a-half minutes remaining in regulation. With goalie Max Vayrynen pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Mosely found the net again with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to re-tie the contest, then completed a hat trick with the game-winner in the extra period.

The Northern hockey team fell 6-1 at Saint Thomas Saturday evening.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team swept Saginaw Valley State 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 26-24) Saturday evening. Meg Raabe led the Huskies with 18 kills. Tess Hayes had 34 assists. Brooke Dzwik logged 14 digs.

The Northern volleyball team outfought Wayne State 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 29-27) Saturday. Calumet’s Helen Beiring had four kills and three blocks for the Wildcats.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team blasted Minot State 37-3 Saturday. William Marano ran for 133 yards and one touchdown. Alex Fries tossed a touchdown pass to Ethan Champney. Dante Basanese returned an interception for a score, and Drew Wyble kicked three field goals.

The Northern football team dropped a 62-17 decision at Saginaw Valley State Saturday.

College Basketball

The NMU men’s basketball team opened its season this weekend with a 108-101 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday. The Wildcats will face Lubbock Christian tonight.

NHL

The Red Wings rallied for three goals in the third period, and shaded the Bruins 5-4 Saturday night. Lucas Raymond, Jake Walman, Dylan Larkin, David Perron and Andrew Copp scored for Detroit. Ville Husso stopped 26 shots.

The Wings visit the Rangers Tuesday, with coverage at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons will entertain the Suns this afternoon.

NFL

The Lions have this weekend off.

The Packers host the Rams in a 1:00 game today.

The Bengals will welcome the Bills in the Sunday night game, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

As expected, pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez has opted out of the final three years of his contract with the Tigers. He leaves $49 million on the table, but is expected to make more than that with a new deal.

The Tigers have obtained outfielder and first baseman Mark Canha from the Brewers. Canha joined Milwaukee mid-season, after a trade from the Mets. In 50 games with the Crew, he batted .287, hit five home runs, and drove in 33 runs. Detroit gives up pitching prospect Blake Holub, who split time between single-A and double-A last season.
