High School
In high school football Saturday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell made up a 14-point deficit late in the game, and completed an undefeated regular season with a dramatic 34-28 win over Forest Park. The Lakes took an early lead when Blake Dupuis raced 68 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Lake Linden then recovered a Forest Park fumble near midfield. A few plays later, quarterback Arthur Lyons scored on a one-yard run to put the Lakes up 14-0. The momentum shifted suddenly, though, and Forest Park scored three unanswered touchdowns to take a 20-14 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Trojans extended that lead with their fourth straight touchdown in the third quarter. Again, though, the momentum shifted quickly. Lyons hit Lucas Klein with a 13 yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter, and Dupuis hit Klein with a 14-yard scoring strike on a halfback option pass with 5:57 remaining to tie the game at 28. The Lakes mounted their final scoring drive in the final minutes, capping the effort with a one-yard scoring run by Dupuis with 35 seconds remaining. – Baraga closed its first season of eight-man ball with a 48-6 victory over Superior Central. The Vikings finish with a record of 5-4 (3-4, fifth place in the Western Eight).
– Ontonagon lost to Engadine 41-16. The Gladiators end with a 2-7 record (1-6, tied for seventh in the Western Eight.
The high school playoff pairings will be announced this evening during a live broadcast which begins at 7:00 on Fox Sports Detroit.
The Chassell boys and girls cross country teams each claimed first place in Division Three at the U.P. cross country championship meet on Saturday. The Panther girls finished just two points better than Munising. Shitaye Sam placed second individually, and Lela Rautiola placed seventh. Dollar Bay finished fourth. The Panther boys finished 18 points better than second-place Dollar Bay. Abe Gockenbach placed second individually, Hunter Rautiola was fifth, and Ben Tuomi seventh for the Panthers. Brendan Leclaire and Jacob Iacono placed third and fourth for the Blue Bolts. Jeffers finished seventh.
In Division Two, the Hancock girls finished second behind Ishpeming. Taylor Pertile placed second individually, Madisyn Wright was fifth, and Ashley Aho second. The Hancock boys finished fifth.
In Division One, the Calumet girls finished fourth, and Houghton fifth. On the boys’ side, Houghton finished fourth, with Seth Helman placing eighth individually. Calumet placed seventh, with Mitchell Delong fifth individually.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team defeated Northern Michigan University 3-1 Saturday night, to salvage a split of their weekend series. Tyler Heinonen, Joel L’Esperance and Mason Blacklock all scored within a six-minute span early in the second period.
The MTU football team lost at third-ranked Ferris State 24-14 Saturday afternoon. Tech quarterback Brandon Cowie completed just seven of 19 passes for 88 passing yards. He threw one interception, and was knocked out of the game after a late hit on the sideline in the fourth quarter. Jake Brown replaced him for the final two series.
The MTU soccer team will host Saginaw Valley State today at noon.
The MTU volleyball team completed a road sweep with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 25-21) victory over Ohio Dominican Saturday.
At the GLIAC Cross Country Championships in Detroit on Saturday, the Michigan tech men’s team placed fifth, and the women eighth. Details are here.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team fell behind unbeaten Ashland 21-0 Saturday afternoon, but mounted a furious comeback to take a 40-35 lead late in the game. The Eagles found the endzone with seven seconds remaining, and spoiled the Wildcats’ upset bid 41-40.
Finlandia
The Finlandia football team earned its second victory of the season Saturday, defeating Trinity Bible College 21-14. The Lions fell behind early, but scored two unanswered touchdowns in the second half to secure the win. Ronald Brown completed 28 of 48 passes for 310 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Darrion Robinson caught 18 of those passes for 224 yards and both scores.
The Finlandia women’s soccer team lost 6-0 at Maranatha Bible University Saturday. The men’s team plays at Webster University today at noon.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings scored two goals in the third period to tie Vancouver, and then beat the Canucks 3-2 when Gustav Nyquist scored in overtime. Petr Mrazek made 30 saves in net, and earned an assist on the winning goal with a long pass that Nyquist converted. The Wings host the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday evening. NBA
The Detroit Pistons open their regular season Wednesday night at home against the Utah Jazz. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The World Series begins Tuesday night, when the Kansas City Royals host the New York Mets.
NFL
The Detroit Lions host the Minnesota Vikings today. Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is listed as questionable for the game because of an illness. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The Green Bay Packers have the week off.
