Lakes Fall in FB District Final; Tech Holds Miner’s Cup – Sunday Sports Wrap

Lake Linden-Hubbell’s fine football season ended Saturday with a 40-16 loss to Norway in the state tournament district championship game. The Lakes finish with a record of 10-1.

Here’s how Upper Peninsula teams fared in district title games…
– In Division Four, Escanaba defeated Alma 31-13 Saturday afternoon. The Eskymos will play at Grand Rapids Catholic Central, which eliminated Allendale 38-7 on Friday.
– In Division Five, Menominee crushed Grayling 61-7 Saturday afternoon. The Maroons will play next at unbeaten Reed City, which beat Remus Chippewa Hills 34-28 Friday night.
– In Division Six, Calumet advanced with a 6-0 win over Negaunee Friday night. The Copper Kings will host Maple City Glen Lake, which eliminated Roscommon 36-12 Friday night. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– In Division Seven, Traverse City St. Francis pounded Iron Mountain 54-6 Friday night. No U.P. teams remain in Division Seven.
– In Division Eight, Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Norway 40-16 Saturday afternoon. The winner will meet St. Ignace, which defeated Newberry 26-6 Friday night.
– In the Eight Player Division, North Central outscored Forest Park 60-50 Friday night. Pickford edged Engadine 30-28. The Jets and Panthers will meet in the state semifinals next weekend.

The Michigan Tech football team retained possession of the Miner’s Cup Saturday, after a wild 51-45 overtime victory over Northern Michigan University. The Wildcats led 28-16 at halftime, but the Huskies came back to tie it on a 72-yard touchdown run by James Henderson in the third quarter. The teams traded touchdowns until Tech took the lead on a Kevin Miller run with 56-seconds remaining. The Wildcats returned the ensuing kickoff 59 yards. With 14 seconds remaining, on a fourth-and-one play from the Huskies’ 18-yard line, Shaye Brown found Jaranta Lewis in the back of the end zone to force overtime. Neither team scored on its first OT possession. An NMU field goal attempt on their second possession misfired. Tech took over, and put the game away with a nine-yard John Williams touchdown run.

The Tech hockey team earned a split in their weekend series at Michigan State with a 5-1 victory on Saturday. Five different players scored for the Huskies. Mark Auk opened the scoring nearly five minutes into the contest, and Joel L’Esperance netted the eventual game-winner just 11 seconds later. Angus Redmond stopped 17 shots in goal to get the win. Tech lost 3-2 in overtime Friday night.

The Tech volleyball team won its fourth-straight match Saturday, defeating Hillsdale 3-1 (25-13, 25-16, 22-25, 25-21). Aubrey Ficek had 14 kills and nine digs. The Huskies swept Northwood 3-0 Friday evening.

The MTU soccer team will face top-seeded Grand Valley State in the championship game of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer tournament this afternoon at 1:00 in Allendale. The Huskies advanced to the title game by eliminating Walsh 1-0 in their semifinal match Friday evening. Tech lost to the Lakers 1-0 in their regular-season meeting in September.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team fell to the University of Wisconsin 2-0 Saturday night. The loss left the Wildcats with a sweep of their weekend series in Madison, after a 5-2 victory Friday night.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss at Aurora University in Illinois Saturday night. Alec Rounds stopped 24 shots, but took the loss in net for the Lions, who also dropped a 4-2 to the Spartans on Friday. The Finlandia women’s hockey team had the weekend off.

The Finlandia volleyball team lost both of its matches at the American Collegiate Athletic Association Championships in Chicago on Saturday, falling 3-0 (21-25, 13-25, 15-25) to Illinois Tech, and 3-0 (16-25, 14-25, 16-25) to Alfred State. The Lions finish their season with a record of nine wins and 23 losses.

The Finlandia football team wrapped up its season with a 17-13 loss at home against Trinity Bible College Saturday. The Lions built a 13-3 lead early in the third quarter, but couldn’t stop two late TBC drives. Finlandia closes its second season of football with a record of one win and seven losses.

The Calumet Wolverines defeated the Monroe Blues 8-2 Saturday night to complete a successful first weekend of their Great Lakes Hockey League season. The Wolves edged the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 5-4 Friday night.

The results of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ games this weekend were not reported.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons defeated the Denver Nuggets 103-86 Saturday night. Andre Drummond led the effort with 19 points and 20 rebounds. Detroit opens a west coast road trip tomorrow night against the Los Angeles Clippers.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings have lost four straight, and host the Edmonton Oilers this afternoon.

The Detroit Lions visit the Minnesota Vikings for a 1:00 game today. The Lions will again be without linebacker DeAndre Levy.
