The MTU football team lost 45-20 at fifth-ranked Grand Valley State last evening. The Huskies kept it close early, but two Lakers’ scores late in the second quarter gave GVSU a 24-7 halftime lead. Will Ark threw three touchdown passes for Tech, but the Huskies’ defense gave up 589 yards of total offense.

NMU

MLB
The Detroit Tigers sent Victor Martinez off with a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals yesterday. Martinez started at first base, but actually played just one inning in his final game. With Nicholas Castellanos at first base, Martinez legged out a two-out infield single, then left to a prolonged ovation as he was replaced by pinch-runner Ronny Rodriguez. Niko Goodrum followed with a single that drove in Castellanos. The big blow of the game was a two-run homer by Mikie Mahtook, which gave Detroit a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Shane Greene gave up a solo home run in the top of the ninth, but was able to earn his 31st save.

The Tigers host the Royals again this afternoon. Daniel Norris will start against Brad Keller. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers collected just five hits, and lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 yesterday. Zach Davies gave up two runs over four innings, and took the loss.

The Brewers conclude that series at Pittsburgh this afternoon. Wade Miley will pitch against Nick Kingham.

The Cubs and Cardinals both won, so the Brewers now trail Chicago by two-and-a-half games in the National League Central Division, and  lead Saint Louis by two games in the race for the top wild card playoff berth.

NHL
Evgeny Svechnikov’s goal 1:42 into overtime lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins in NHL preseason play last night. Filip Zadina, Dennis Cholowski and Vili Saarijarvi also scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 23 saves.
