Lakes Earn All-U.P. Boys Hoops Honors
Lake Linden-Hubbell senior Tyler Roose and Brett Poissant have been named to the All-U.P. Class D Boys Basketball First Team by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Roose became the Lakes’ all-time leading scorer this season, and Poissant was named Copper Country Conference Coach of the Year. Baraga’s Brendan Varline was named to the Class D Second Team. Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Arthur Lyons received special mention votes.
Lake Linden-Hubbell coach Jack Kumpula was named Class D Coach of the Year. Kumpula led the Lakes to an unbeaten regular season, and a Copper Country Conference championship. The Lakes fell in the tournament regional final to eventual state champion North Central.
Nate Gockenbach of the Houghton Gremlins was named to the Class A-B-C Second Team. Calumet’s Jack Hyrkas and L’Anse’s Cody Clement received special mention votes.
Rowe Named to Girls Dream Team
Calumet girls basketball player Lexie Rowe was named to the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Dream Team. Clara Loukus and Ellen Twardzik from the state champion Copper Kings were named to the Class A-B-C Second Team. Sydney Dillinger from Houghton was named to the Class A-B-C First team, and teammate Sloane Zenner made the Second Team. Hancock’s Maija Sebbas received Special Mention votes, and Taylor Pertile of the Bulldogs was an Honorable Mention.
Calumet head coach Jeff Twardzik was named Coach of the Year for leading his team to a state title in his first season at the helm. The Copper Kings were named Class A-B-C Team of the Year.
Carli Daavettila from Dollar Bay was named to the Class D Second Team. Teammate Meagan Kangas earned Special Mention votes, as did Lori Wardynski from Ontonagon, Gabby Mayo from Baraga, and Sarah Audette from Lake Linden-Hubbell.
Finlandia Softball Sweeps Doubleheader
The Finlandia softball team won both ends of a doubleheader at Maranatha Baptist Bible College Friday afternoon. The Lions won the first contest 12-2. Hillary Brewer had four hits, and drove in three runs. Nicole Dall gave up five hits, and earned the win. Finlandia took the second game 13-2. Brewer had four more hits, and drove in two runs. Miranda Brewer gave up five hits to get the win. The Lions will play two more at Maranatha Baptist Bible College this afternoon.
NHL – Red Wings Visit Wild
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Minnesota tonight.
NBA – Pistons Fall at Chicago
The Detroit Pistons lost 88-82 at Chicago last night. The Bulls powered by holding Detroit to just nine points in the second quarter. The Pistons came back, outscoring Chicago 24-12 in the third quarter, but the Bulls were stronger down the stretch. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 22 points. Andre Drummond had 14 points, 22 rebounds and six blocks. and became the first player in Pistons history to have at least 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 100 blocks in consecutive seasons. Detroit will host the Heat tonight.
MLB
Anibal Sanchez gave up a grand slam home run in the first inning, and the Detroit Tigers lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 11-5 yesterday, Sanchez gave up an additional run in the second inning, but then settled down, and retired the final 12 batters he faced. The Tigers came back, powered by a two-run homer by Miguel Cabrera, but Tampa scored six more runs off Al Alburquerque to put the game away. The Tigers face the Rays in their final spring exhibition game this afternoon. Alfredo Simon will start.
The Tigers sent left-handers Kyle Ryan and Blaine Hardy to Triple-A Toledo yesterday, and assigned infielder Josh Wilson to Minor League camp. That means rookie right-hander Angel Nesbitt and lefty Ian Krol will open the season in the Detroit bullpen. Either Ryan or Hardy may still wind up with the big club, depending on the status of Justin Verlander, who will open the season on the disabled list.
Scooter Gennett drove in three runs, as the Brewers defeated the Indians 6-3 yesterday. Wily Peralta gave up three runs over 4-2/3rds innings. The Brewers will wrap up spring training with another game against the Indians this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will start.
NFL
The Detroit Lions added some cornerback depth yesterday by signing nine-year veteran Josh Wilson. Wilson played for the Falcons last season.
Michigan State faces Duke… and Kentucky takes on Wisconsin… in the NCAA Division One Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinals this evening. Hear both games… and the title game Monday night… on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
