High School

In baseball yesterday
• Jeffers swept Houghton, 7-5 and 9-7. The second game was a scrimmage, after a planned contest against L’Anse was canceled.
• Calumet’s games at Iron Mountain were canceled.
• Hancock v Ontonagon.

On the baseball schedule this afternoon, weather permitting…
• Houghton journeys to Negaunee.
• Hancock entertains Westwood.
• Calumet travels to Ishpeming.
• Jeffers plays at L’Anse.

In softball yesterday…
• Houghton v Negaunee – no report.
• Hancock took two from Westwood, 4-1 and 5-3. Sadie Biekkola got the complete-game win in game one. Sydnie Scholie went the distance in game two. Ella Storm had two hits in the nightcap.
• Calumet and Ishpeming split their games, with the Hematites taking the opener 13-1, and the Copper Kings winning the nightcap 15-14.
• L’Anse swept Jeffers, 7-6 and 20-8.

On today’s softball schedule, weather permitting…
• Houghton plays at Ishpeming.
• Hancock visits Negaunee in a game that was originally scheduled for tomorrow.
• Jeffers journeys to Gogebic.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Negaunee.
• Ontonagon visits Ironwood.
• L’Anse travels to Westwood.

Lake Linden-Hubbell swept the team competition at the Division III regional track meet yesterday.
• Bessemer placed second on the boys side. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tied for third with Wakefield-Marenisco. Chassell placed fifth, L’Anse sixth, Ontonagon seventh, Baraga eighth, and Watersmeet ninth. Matthew Jokela of the Lakes claimed the 200 and 400-meter runs. Gabe Popko took the 110-meter hurdles, the shot put and the discus throw. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta took the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City came in second on the girls side, followed by Ontonagon, Ewen-Trout Creek, Baraga, Bessemer, Chassell and Wakefield-Marenisco. Lake Linden’s Emily Jokela won the 100 and 400-meter dashes, and the 300-meter hurdles. Dollar Bay’s Taryn Maki claimed the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.

In golf today…
• Calumet, Houghton and Hancock will compete at the WestPAC Championship at the Timberstone Golf Course at Iron Mountain.
• The Copper Mountain Conference Tournament will be held at the Calumet Golf Club.

NHL

The NHL conference championship series are set. Last night, the Oilers held off the Canucks 3-2, to take game seven of their second round series.

The Eastern Conference finals open tonight, as the Rangers host the Panthers. The Stars will entertain the Oilers in game one of the Western conference series tomorrow.

NBA

The NBA Eastern Conference championship series opens tonight, as the Celtics welcome the Pacers. The Western Conference set begins tomorrow, as the Timberwolves host the Mavericks.

MLB

The Royals scored six runs in the sixth inning, and downed the Tigers 8-3 last night. Detroit starter Reese Olson gave up two runs before he was hit on the hip by a line drive with two outs in the third inning. He has a bruise, but should be okay. The KC explosion in the sixth came off Joey Wentz and Will Vest. Wentz gave up five hits, and did not retire a batter. Kerry Carpenter homered for Detroit.

The Tigers continue that series at Kansas City tonight. Casey Mize will start against Alec Marsh. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers took a two-one lead into the ninth inning last night, but the Marlins scored one off Trevor Magill in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, then plated another off Mitch White in the bottom of the 10th to claim a 3-2 win. The late fade spoiled an otherwise excellent night for the Milwaukee bullpen, which was called on early after starter Joe Ross left the game with back stiffness after just 15 pitches. Christian Yelich stole home plate.

The Brewers face the Marlins again tonight. Robert Gasser will start against Trevor Rogers.

Milwaukee reached all the way down to their Double-A Biloxi team for a fresh arm before yesterday’s game, and brought up prospect Bradley Blalock. Thyago Vieira was designated for assignment to open a roster spot. The Crew also reinstated Joey Wiemer from the injured list, and sent Chris Roller back to Nashville.

Horseshoes

The Copper Country Horseshoe League began its season last night.
• Calumet Electronics shaded Dreamland One 5-4.
• Luigi’s slipped past Eva’s Hideaway 5-4.
• Ahmeek Fire Department edged Maple Leaf 5-4.
• Harter’s Party Store downed Calumet One 6-3.
• Bucko’s blanked L and L 9-0.
• Houghton Building Supply defeated Mohawk Superette 8-1.
