Lakes Crush Gremlins – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football yesterday, Lake Linden-Hubbell ripped Houghton 40-0. Six different players scored for the Lakes, who outgained the Gremlins 382 yards to 93. Caleb Klein rushed for 109 yards for Lake Linden, and Caleb Gregoire added 106. Xander Zapolnik ran for 62 yards for Houghton. See the game box score here.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University volleyball team concluded the Carthage Classic in Wisconsin yesterday with a 3-0 (25-6, 25-15, 25-6) loss to Carthage, and a 3-0 (25-9. 25-6, 25-8) loss to Concordia-Wisconsin.

The Lions women’s soccer team edged Lawrence 2-1 yesterday. Kirsten L’Esperance and Erika Lambert scored for the Lions.

Both Finlandia soccer teams host Eureka College today. The women’s game begins at 11:00, and the men’s game starts at 1:00.

The Finlandia football team lost 23-12 to Concordia-Chicago yesterday afternoon. After falling behind 14-0, the Lions scored late in the first half when Darin Johnson connected with former L’Anse High School standout Reese Waara for a 60-yard touchdown play. DJ Davis scored the Lions second touchdown on a three-yard run in the fourth quarter.

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech volleyball team swept Grand Valley State University 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-16) yesterday. Olivia Ghormley led the Huskies with 13 kills, and Megan Utlak had 17 digs.

The MTU football team began its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference campaign with a 23-7 loss yesterday afternoon at Saginaw Valley State. The Huskies scored early on a 52-yard Will Ark to Jacob Wenzlick pass play. They held the lead until the Cardinals broke through with 17 points in the fourth quarter. Ark completed 15 of 33 passes for 242 yards. The Huskies were held to 78 yards on the ground.

The Northern Michigan University football team lost 21-7 to Davenport yesterday.

The Tech soccer team is off this weekend.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers dropped their fifth straight game yesterday, falling 5-3 to the Chicago White Sox. Tyler Alexander pitched four shutout innings, but left as the Sox scored three times in the fifth. Dawel Lugo had three hits for Detroit.

The Tigers host White Sox again this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will pitch against Reynaldo Lopez. Because of Detroit Lions football on 99.3 The Lift, Tigers pregame coverage begins at 12:45 on KBear 102.3. 

For the second straight night, the Milwaukee Brewers blasted the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1. Zach Davies and five relievers held the Bucs to six hits. Trent Grisham and Keston Hiura homered.

The Brewers entertain the Pirates again this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will start against Trevor Williams.

The Cardinals defeated the Cubs again yesterday, so Milwaukee remains three games behind Saint Louis in the National League Central Division. The Cubs are six games out. The Brewers lead Chicago by three games in the race for the final wild card playoff berth, and trail the Washington Nationals by one game for the top berth.

The Detroit Red Wings host the Pittsburgh Penguins in a preseason contest this afternoon.

The Green Bay Packers host the Denver Broncos in a 1:00 game today. The Detroit Lions visit the Philadelphia Eagles for a 1:00 game. Lions pregame coverage will begin at 11:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Calumet Wolverines play the Portage Lake Pioneers Tuesday at the Colosseum. Pregame coverage starts at 7:45 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
