The Michigan Tech hockey team edged Alabama-Huntsville in overtime Saturday night to earn a sweep of their weekend series. The game will officially be logged as a 1-1 tie. That was the score at the end of the official overtime period. That made this game the first to be extended into a second, three-on-three overtime period under rules adopted before the season started by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. In that second overtime, Reid Sturos found the net to give the Huskies the victory. Devin Kero earned his first win in net for the Huskies.

NCAA rules do not recognize the second overtime, hence the official 1-1 tie in the record book. Individual stats accrued during the second OT are not added to a player’s career totals. The WCHA awards one standings point to each team for the tie, and a bonus point to the team that wins during the second OT.

The Tech volleyball team split its final two games at the Midwest Regional Crossover event in Chicago Saturday. The Huskies defeated Quincy 3-2 (25-19, 25-17, 16-25, 22-25, 15-9), before falling to Rockhurst 3-0 (16-25, 25-27, 22-25).

The Huskies soccer team plays at Walsh this afternoon.

The Tech women’s tennis team lost 7-2 to Tiffin Saturday morning. The Huskies entertain Findlay this morning at 10:00.

The Huskies football team took a 17-0 lead into the fourth quarter at Tiffin yesterday afternoon, only to see the Dragons score three touchdowns and a field goal in the closing minutes, and win the game 24-17. Quarterback Brandon Cowie threw one touchdown pass, and caught another from wide receiver David Walter, but threw two critical interceptions in the closing minutes. The first came with the score tied, and 1:43 remaining. The Dragons’ Stefan Willis picked off a pass and returned it 62 yards for the winning touchdown. The second came with 20 seconds remaining, when a Tech drive that had moved the ball to the Tiffin 15 yard line ended with an interception in the end zone.
