In boys high school basketball action last night…
– Unbeaten Lake Linden-Hubbell crushed Wakefield-Marenisco 81-36. Arthur Lyons led the Lakes with 33 points. Dayne Matson added 18.
– Calumet got past L’Anse 53-42.
– Hancock downed Bessemer 60-44.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City stopped Baraga 59-49.
– Jeffers outscored Watersmeet 59-37.
– Ontonagon defeated Chassell 83-64.

In high school hockey last night, Calumet blanked Houghton 2-0. Ed Beiring scored the game-winner midway through the second period. Rory Anderson added an insurance goal on a penalty shot in the third period. Ian Carroll stopped 23 shots to earn the shutout for the Copper Kings. Will Stier stopped 31 of 33 shots in net for the Gremlins.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Pittsburgh tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons have acquired forward Tobias Harris from the Orlando Magic. In exchange, Orlando gets guard Brandon Jennings and forward Ersan Ilyasova. Harris is 23 years old. He’s averaged 14 points and seven rebounds in 49 starts for the Magic this season.
The Pistons return from the All-Star break Friday night, when they play at Washington. Tip-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and M 99.3, WCCY.
NFL
The Detroit Lions have released running back Joique Bell. Bell was a home-state favorite, having starred at Benton Harbor High School and Wayne State University. He was hampered by injuries last season, and younger running backs Theo Riddick and Ameer Abdullah took bigger roles in the offense.
Detroit cornerback Rashean Mathis has retired. Mathis spent 13 seasons in the NFL – the first 10 with Jacksonville. His 2015 season ended in week seven when he suffered a concussion.
The annual Keweenaw Time-Speed-Distance Rally will begin Saturday with registration at the Franklin Square Inn between 11:00 and 12:30. The first car will leave at 1:00 on the 250-mile course that will cover portions of Houghton, Baraga and Keweenaw Counties. Advance registration costs $40.00 per team for SCCA members, and $45.00 for non-members. On-site registration will cost an additional $5.00. To get details, visit the event Facebook page here.
