Morning Sports for Saturday, June 7th:
MLB: Tigers Snap Losing Streak
The Tigers stopped their losing streak with a crisp 6-2 victory over the Red Sox last night. Drew Smyly earned the win… giving up two runs over six innings… only one of them earned. Ian Kinsler and Torii Hunter hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning, and Victor Martinez added a solo shot in the eighth.
The Tigers host the Red Sox again tonight. Max Scherzer will face Jon Lester. Hear the first pitch at 7:15 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Alex Avila left last night’s game after David Ortiz’ bat hit him in the head with a backswing. Manager Brad Ausmus said Avila suffered a mild concussion… but was expected to be all right today. Avila will probably sit out today’s game.
Pirates Pound Brewers
The Pirates scored eight runs in the sixth inning, and blasted the Brewers 15-5. Kyle Lohse had already given up five runs when the sixth inning opened. He gave up another run… and left the game with two on base. Tyler Thornburg allowed those two runners to score… and six more before the inning finally ended.
The Brewers continue that series at Pittsburgh this afternoon. Matt Garza will start against Edinson Volquez.
