Matthew Boyd was much improved Saturday night, but the Detroit Tigers lost to the Cleveland Indians 6-1. Boyd threw five shutout innings, took a 1-0 lead into the sixth, thanks to Willi Castro’s fourth-inning home run. He left with two runners on and one out. John Schreiber was on the mound as Cleveland scored four times. The first two runs were charged to Boyd, who took the loss. Indians rookie Triston McKenzie sparkled in his major league debut, giving up a run on two hits over six frames, and striking out 10.

Tigers infielder Dawel Lugo was not claimed on waivers, and has been assigned to Toledo. Lugo was designated for assignment Monday to make room for third baseman Isaac Paredes.
The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their third straight game, 12-5 to the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday. Josh Lindblom gave up three runs over four innings, and took the loss. Brent Suter, Eric Yardley, Angel Perdomo and Drew Rasmussen combined to allow nine runs on eight hits in five innings of relief.
That set concludes in Pittsburgh this afternoon. Corbin Burnes will pitch against JT Brubaker.
The Brewers have designated utility player Brock Holt for assignment. Jace Peterson has been activated from the taxi squad.
The Houston Astros have shut down their alternate training site because of a positive COVID-19 test. Team officials say contact tracing from the infected individual does not lead to anyone associated with the major league team. The Astros will continue to play.

The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League will hold its championship tournament today at the Stanton field. Regular-season champion Superior National Bank-Stanton will face Dean Kangas-State Farm in the first semifinal at 11:00. Garnet Garage-Subway will take on REL-Mohawk Technology at 1:30. The championship game will begin at 4:00. Coverage of all three contests will start at 10:45 on KBear 102.3.

This fall’s Lake Superior Performance Rally has been canceled because of COVID-19 concerns. In a social media post, officials cited health concerns, and the loss of some of the races key areas and stages. Board chair Joanne Polzien said it became clear that they could not put on an event they could be proud of, while ensuring the safety of competitors, workers, volunteers, spectators and the community.
