Lake Linden-Hubbell Dominates CMC Track Honors – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In baseball yesterday..
• Houghton v Negaunee – no report.
• Calumet v Westwood – canceled.
• Jeffers swept Gogebic 4-1 and 9-0. Levi Frahm homered and drove in three runs in the opener, then tossed a two-hit shutout in the nightcap. Chase Kinnunen had three hits in the second game.

On today’s baseball schedule…

In softball yesterday…
• Houghton dropped a 2-1 pitchers’ duel to Negaunee. Brielle Anderson’s infield grounder with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh drove in the winning run for the Miners. Estella Suomis faced the minimum number of batters until allowing a home run in the fifth. Grace Nardi struck out 18 Bulldogs.

In golf yesterday…
• Houghton, Hancock and Calumet at the Calumet course – no report

At the WestPAC Conference track meet at Ishpeming yesterday…
• Houghton claimed the boys’ team title by a big margin over Negaunee. Calumet placed third, and Hancock eighth. Luke Hill of the Gremlins won the 800 and 1600-meter runs. Brody Mattila took the 110 and 300-meter hurdles and the long jump. Calumet’s Matthew Frantti won the shot put and the discus throw.
• Negaunee took the top spot on the women’s side. Houghton came in second, Calumet third, and Hancock sixth. West Iron County’s Danica Shamion had a big day, with wins in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes and the high jump.

Lake Linden-Hubbell swept the Copper Mountain Conference meet at Baraga…
• On the boys side, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished second, followed by Ironwood, Baraga, Ontonagon, Ewen-Trout Creek, Bessemer, Chassell, Jeffers and Wakefield-Marenisco. Matthew Jokela of the Lakes won the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Gabe Popko claimed the shot put and the discus throw. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs.
• On the women’s side, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City placed second, followed by Ironwood, Baraga, Ontonagon, Ewen-Trout Creek, Bessemer, Chassell, Jeffers and Wakefield-Marenisco. Lake Linden’s Emily Jokela took the 100, 200 and 300-meter dashes and the 300-meter hurdles. Abi Codere won the 100-meter hurdles and the pole vault.

All-conference honors were awarded after the meet, with Lake Linden-Hubbell claiming Team of the Year honors for both boys and girls.
• On the girls side, Emily Jokela was named Most Valuable Player. Reese Holley from Baraga shared Top Thrower honors with Emma Worden of Ironwood. Ontonagon’s Violet Amos was named Top Sprinter. Dollar Bay’s Tayrn Maki shared Top Distance Runner honors with Ironwood’s Aubrey Smith. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City’s Kiera Isaacson was honored as Top Jumper. Lake Linden’s Abi Codere was selected as Top Hurdler, and Lakes’ coach Gary Guisfredi was named Coach of the Year.
• Matt Jokela from Lake Linden was honored as boys’ Most Valuable Player. Gabe Popko of the Lakes was named Top Thrower, Bessemer’s Tommy Trudgeon Top Sprinter, and Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta Top Distance Runner. Josh Daavettila of the Lakes was selected as Top Jumper, and Talon Hughes of Ironwood as Top Hurdler. Brett Gervais of the Lakes was named Coach of the Year.

The Houghton girls soccer team’s inaugural season ended yesterday with a 7-0 loss to Traverse City St. Francis in the opening round of the district tournament.

NHL

The Panthers opened the Eastern Conference championship series with a 3-0 victory over the Rangers last night. Game two will be played tomorrow. Tonight, the Stars host the Oilers in the first game of the Western Conference championship series. 

NBA

The Mavericks took game one of the Western Conference championship series last night, shading the Timberwolves 108-105. That set continues tomorrow. Tonight, the Celtics entertain the Pacers. Boston has a 1-0 lead in the Eastern Conference championship series.

MLB

The Royals completed an easy series sweep of the Tigers with an 8-3 victory yesterday. Tarik Skubal gave up four runs over five innings. KC’s other four runs came off Alex Lange in the seventh.

In the three-game series, Kansas City outscored Detroit 26-9.

The Tigers begin a home series against the Blue Jays tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Kevin Gausman. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Freddy Peralta gave up a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, and the Brewers fell to the Marlins 1-0 last evening. Peralta allowed just four hits over seven innings. Miami’s Jesús Luzardo held Milwaukee to three hits over eight frames, and, at one point, retired 17 straight batters.

The Brewers have today off, and open a series in Boston tomorrow. Bryse Wilson will start against Kutter Crawford.
