Lake Linden, Calumet Win Volleyball Districts – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

– The Copper Kings swept the Class C final, 3-0 over Ironwood. Calumet will play Munising in the regional semifinal Tuesday at 7:30 at Gladstone.
– The Lakes eliminated Baraga 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-11). Maija Codere had 11 kills. Lake Linden will face Rudyard in the regional semifinal Tuesday at 7:30 at Westwood.
– Houghton will play at Menominee in the Class B district final tonight. That match will start at 6:30 Eastern/5:30 Central time.

In the high school football tournament, Calumet travels to Negaunee to play for the Division Six district title tonight at 7:00. The Copper Kings are hoping to avenge a 14-6 loss to the Miners in week two of the regular season. Our pregame coverage will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Norway tomorrow at 1:00 in the Division Eight district title game. It will be the first meeting between these teams since at least the mid-1950s, and maybe the first ever. Our pregame coverage will start around 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

MTU
The MTU soccer team will face Walsh in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament tonight at Grand Valley State. Grand Valley will meet Ohio Dominican in the other semifinal. The winners will advance to the championship match on Sunday.

Six Huskies soccer players have received postseason honors from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Kirsen Hudak was named Goalie of the Year.  Forward Jaci Mielke joined has on the all-conference first team. Midfielders Kat Farkas and Jessica Splittgerber, and defender Emily Morin were named to the second team. Maddie Faust received honorable mention votes. Read more about them here.

The Huskies hockey team skates at Michigan State tonight and tomorrow night.

Former Michigan Tech goaltender Jamie Phillips has been named the East Coast Hockey League Goaltender of the Month. Phillips won all six of his starts for the Tulsa Oilers in October. He’s under contract with the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets.

The Tech volleyball team hosts Northwood this evening at 7:00, and Hillsdale tomorrow afternoon at 3:00.

The MTU football team wraps up its season at Northern Michigan University tomorrow afternoon in the annual Miner’s Cup game. Kickoff is at 1:00 at the Superior Dome.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team skates at Wisconsin tonight and tomorrow night.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team skates at Aurora University in Illinois tonight and tomorrow night. The women’s hockey team has the weekend off.

The Finlandia volleyball team heads to Chicago for the American Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. The Lions will face Illinois Tech and Alfred State tomorrow.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines open their Great Lakes Hockey League seasons tonight. The Pioneers entertain the Monroe Blues this evening, and the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tomorrow. Both games start at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. The Wolverines host the Ice Dogs tonight, and the Blues tomorrow. Both games start at 7:30 in front of the new boards and glass at the Colosseum.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Winnipeg Jets tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Pistons are off until tomorrow, when they entertain the Denver Nuggets.

Francisco Rodriguez will return to the Detroit Tigers as their closer next season. The team announced yesterday that they have picked up his six-million-dollar contract option for 2017. Center fielder Cameron Maybin will not be back. Rather than exercise his nine-million-dollar option, the Tigers traded him to the Los Angeles Angels. In exchange, they get minor-league pitcher Victor Alcantara. The Tigers have also brought Mike Rojas back to manage the Toledo Mud Hens. Rojas led the Hens to a division title in 2007, before becoming Detroit’s minor league field coordinator, and then bullpen coach. He’ll replace Lloyd McClendon, who has become the Tigers’ major-league hitting coach.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Atlanta Falcons outscored the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 43-28.

The Detroit Lions visit the Minnesota Vikings for a 1:00 game on Sunday. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Green Bay Packers host the Indianapolis Colts for a 4:25 game.
