High School
In high school hockey…
– At the Marquette Classic, Matt Sanregret’s hat trick led Hancock to a 5-1 victory over Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday. On Friday, Hancock scored two goals in the closing seconds, and defeated Ann Arbor-Pioneer 6-4.
– At the Jeffers New Year Tournament at MacInnes Arena on Saturday, the Jets fell to Cheboygan 4-2. On Friday, Jeffers doubled up Pinckney 8-4.
– Robert Erkkila’s natural hat trick led the way as Calumet blanked Kingsford 8-0 Saturday night at the Colosseum. Ian Carroll and Logan Storm shared the shutout for the Kings.

Michigan Tech Women’s Hoops Upset
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season yesterday, falling at Tiffin 80-66. The Huskies came out flat, and trailed by 18 at halftime. Danielle Blake scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Tech. The win was only the third of the season for the Dragons.
The Tech men’s team basketball team earned a 64-50 victory over Tiffin yesterday. The Dragons held Ben Stelzer to just nine points, but Kyle Stankowski stepped up to score 13 for the Huskies. Luke Heller collected 10 rebounds.
Both Huskies teams claimed victories at Ohio Dominican Friday night… the men 84-72, and the women 64-57.
The fifth-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team blew out Wisconsin 8-1 Friday night. On Saturday, the Badgers turned the table, blanking Tech 2-0. Wisconsin goalie Joel Rumpel stopped 47 shots to hand the Huskies their first shutout of the season.
Northern Michigan Hoops Splits at ODU
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Dominican 63-47 yesterday. Bre Gaspervich led the Wildcats with 17 points. The Wildcats’ men’s team lost to the Panthers 73-68. Chavis Mattison scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Northern.
On Friday, the NMU women’s team defeated Tiffin 83-70. The men’s team dropped an 85-81 double-overtime decision to the Dragons.
The Northern Michigan hockey team scored two power play goals to earn a 2-2 tie with third-ranked Minnesota State Saturday night. Friday night, the Mavericks scored three goals in the second period, and beat the Wildcats 4-1.
Finlandia Women Stuff Mount Mary
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team shut down Mount Mary University 87-32 Saturday afternoon. Paige Yoho scored 21 for the Lions, and Valerie Rajala grabbed 10 rebounds.
Both Finlandia hoops teams play at Saint Scholastica tonight.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team skates at Wisconsin-Superior tonight and tomorrow afternoon.
Pioneers Take Two from Wolverines
The Calumet Wolverines took a 2-1 lead into the third period, but the Portage Lake Pioneers came back to earn a 3-2 victory Saturday night at Dee Stadium. In the first game of the home-and-home series Friday night, the Pioneers defeated the Wolverines 7-2.
NHL – Red Wings Prepare for Oilers
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Edmonton tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 9:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Win Fifth Straight
The Detroit Pistons dismantled the Sacramento Kings 114-95 yesterday afternoon. Brandon Jennings led Detroit with 35 points. The Pistons have won five straight since releasing Josh Smith last month. It’s their longest winning streak in more than five years. Detroit will play at San Antonio tomorrow night.
NFL – Lions Lose in Playoffs
The Detroit Lions couldn’t hold a 14-point first half lead, and lost to the Dallas Cowboys 24-20 in the opening round of the NFL playoffs yesterday. Dallas quarterback Tony Romo connected with Terrance Williams for the game-winning touchdown with two-and-a-half minutes remaining. The Lions scored touchdowns in the first quarter on a 51-yard Matt Stafford to Golden Tate pass play, and an 18-yard run by Reggie Bush… but were held to two Matt Prater field goals after that.
The game may have been the last as a Lion for All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who held an emotional meeting with reporters afterward… [SUH]. Suh will become a free agent after the Super Bowl.
In yesterday’s other playoff game, the Colts eliminated the Bengals 26-10.
That sets up next weekend’s schedule. In the AFC, the Ravens will play at New England, and the Colts will travel to Denver. In the NFC, the Panthers will travel to Seattle, and the Packers will open their playoff run at home against the Cowboys. Hear all the games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
