Lady Huskies Still Unbeaten – Sunday Sports Wrap

– Houghton defeated West Iron County 59-43. Sloan Zenner scored 20 for the Gremlins.
– Calumet pounded Jeffers 67-33.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell shut down Chassell 46-29.
– Dollar Bay overcame a nine-point deficit to edge Ontonagon 47-44.
– L’Anse got past Baraga 59-54. The Purple Hornets built a 10-point halftime lead, but the Vikings closed the gap, and tied it when Gaby Mayo sank a jumper off an inbound pass as the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation. Mayo led all scorers with 34 points. Abby Hendrickson scored 18 for L’Anse, and Bailey Froberg added 15.

In boys’ play Friday night… Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Bessemer 78-65.

– Houghton doubled up Escanaba 6-3. Spencer Donnelly scored twice for the Gremlins.
– L’Anse lost to Cheboygan 10-2 at the Cheboygan Holiday Showcase Friday night. The Hornets defeated the Kalamazoo Eagles 10-4 on Saturday.

MTU Women Remain Unbeaten
The undefeated, 20th-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team rode a strong second half to a 77-69 victory over Minot State Saturday. The Huskies were down by three at halftime, but opened the second half with three three-pointers, and never trailed after that. All five of the Huskies’ starters reached double figures in scoring, led by Brenna Heise with 22 points.

The Tech men’s basketball team lost 69-62 at Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon. The Huskies got off to a slow start, trailing by as many as 11 in the first half. A late run closed the deficit to a single point at halftime. The tight second half featured 13 lead changes. The Rangers took the lead for good with three minutes remaining. Ben Stelzer led the Huskies with 32 points.

Both Tech teams are off until January 2nd, when they play at Ohio Dominican.

Finlandia Women Fall at Alma
The Finlandia women’s basketball team built a nine-point halftime lead at Alma College, but the Scots found their shooting touch in the second half, and came back to beat the Lions 55-50. The game was tied at 48 with around four minutes to go, but Alma scored the next seven points to claim the victory. Houghton’s Kelsie Richards led the Lions with 12 points. L’Anse’s Valerie Rajala added 10. Finlandia plays at Adrian College this afternoon.

The Finlandia men’s team defeated Clarke University 90-79 Saturday afternoon. Finlandia broke open a close game with a 15-6 run at the end of the first half, to take an 11-point lead at the break. The Lions led by as many as 20 in the second half. Five Lions scored in double figures, led by Eric Lori with 18. Finlandia will play at Lake Superior State this afternoon.

– The Portage Lake Pioneers edged Eagle River 7-6 in overtime Friday night. Connor Hannon scored the game-winner – his first goal in his first game as a Pioneer. The Falcons edged the Pioneers 5-4 on Saturday.
– Logan Rastello scored twice, as the Calumet Wolverines lost 7-6 at Fox Cities Friday night. On Saturday, the Wolverines couldn’t hold a 3-1 first period lead, and lost at Depere 4-3. Mike Babcock had a goal and an assist.

NHL – Red Wings to Face Colorado
The Red Wings host the Avalanche today. Petr Mrazek will start in goal, replacing Jimmy Howard, who left Friday’s game with an injury. Tom McCollum has been brought up from Grand Rapids to back up Mrazek.

NBA – Pistons Visit Nets
The Pistons play at Brooklyn tonight.

Detroit Lions LionNFL – Lions Reach Playoffs
In the NFL today, the Lions visit the Bears in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. Detroit backed into a playoff spot yesterday, when Washington upset Philadelphia 27-24. The Eagles’ loss assured that the Lions will get at least a wild card berth.

The Packers play at Tampa Bay in a 1:00 game.
