MLB
Jordan Zimmermann’s first start since returning from the disabled list was a short one, as the Detroit Tigers fell to the Chicago White Sox 6-3 yesterday. Chicago scored once in the top of the first inning. Detroit got that run back in the bottom of the inning with an Ian Kinsler home run. The Sox ended Zimmermann’s day by scoring five runs in the second inning, as Avisail Garcia and Jose Abreu homered. Miguel Cabrera hit a late home run for Detroit.
The Tigers host the New York Mets in an interleague series beginning tonight. Justin Verlander will pitch against Noah Syndergaard. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Cleveland won yesterday, so Detroit trails the Indians by three games in the American League Central.
Part of Zimmermann’s problem was physical. He told manager Brad Ausmus after the first inning that he was experiencing tightness in his back. The problem seems to be unrelated to the strained neck muscle that kept him on the disabled list for a month. He’s considered day-to-day.
The Tigers did activate starter Daniel Norris from the disabled list yesterday. He’ll come back from Toledo to fill in for ailing starter Mike Pelfrey. They also got a fresh bullpen arm by sending reliever Kyle Ryan to Toledo, and bringing up Blaine Hardy.
Cameron Maybin missed yesterday’s game with a sprained thumb. He suffered the injury in Wednesday night’s game, and is considered day-to-day.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a set against the Diamondbacks in Arizona tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Braden Shipley.
