L and L Takes Horseshoe League Crown – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball today…
• Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Ontonagon.

Lake Linden-Hubbell’s football season-opener has been rescheduled. The Lakes were originally set to host Carney-Nadeau Friday. That game has been moved up, and will now be played Thursday afternoon, with a 4:30 kickoff at Warner Field.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team has been picked to finish second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season.

In the preseason coaches’ poll, the Huskies finished just two votes behind Grand Valley State. Only six votes separated the top four teams, with Wayne State finishing third, and Ferris State fourth. Northern Michigan University was picked to finish sixth, and Lake Superior State ninth.

The Huskies open their season at the Cal State Monterey Bay Tournament on Friday.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and host the Giants tonight. Drew Hutchison will start against Carlos Rodón. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers blanked the Dodgers 4-0. Eric Lauer tossed five shutout innings. He left with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a Luis Urías home run in the fourth. Keston Hiura homered as the Crew scored three in the top of the ninth to seal the win.

The Brewers visit the Dodgers again tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Tony Gonsolin.

Third baseman Mike Brosseau left last night’s contest with discomfort in his ribs. He’ll be evaluated today. Struggling starter Aaron Ashby has been placed on the injured list with shoulder inflammation. Jason Alexander has been called up to fill in.

Horseshoes

L and L won the Copper Country Horseshoe League tournament championship last night, earning a thin 5-4 victory over Calumet One in the title match. In other results…
• Harter’s Party Store claimed third place with a 5-4 win over Dreamland One.
• Rocky’s Bar cemented fifth place by blanking Dreamland Two 9-0.
• 41 Lumber shaded Bucko’s Party Store 5-4 to take seventh place.
• Ahmeek Fire Department dispatched Drift Inn to claim ninth place.
• Calumet Electronics shut out Loading Zone 9-0 to finish in 11th place.
