Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play last night…
• Bucko’s/Labatts pounded Sayen’s Auto/Coca Cola 30-5, then lost to Pat’s Foods/Buckos 33-20.
• Koppers edged McGann’s/Northern Auto 21-19, then slipped past Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics 24-22.

Fast Pitch Softball

In a make-up Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball game last evening, Superior National Bank defeated Tervo Agency 5-3. Vera Peterson was the winning pitcher. She and relievers Jonna Berg and Ashley Lehto struck out nine batters. Mel Baker took the loss. Theresa Anderson and Nikki Koski each had two hits for SNB.

College Football

The Finlandia University football team has added a new recruit. Alfred Walker comes from Westgate High School in New Iberia, Louisiana.

College Soccer

The Finlandia women’s soccer team has also introduced a new player. Julissa Barrera earned first team all-district honors at Conroe High School in Texas.

Twilight League

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball play tonight…
• At the Hancock Driving Park, Northern Driveline faces Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker.
• At the Stanton field, Garnet Garage plays Houghton Building Supply-Stanton

NBA

The Bucks and Suns open the NBA championship series tonight in Phoenix. Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as doubtful for Milwaukee, although coach Mike Budenholzer said yesterday the Bucks star is making progress recovering from the hyperextended knee he suffered during the Eastern Conference finals.

NHL

In the Stanley Cup championship series, the Canadiens staved off elimination by edging the Lightning 3-2 in overtime. Tampa Bay leads the series 3-1, with game five set for Tampa tomorrow night.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers rode a five-run sixth inning to a 7-3 victory over the Texas Rangers last night. The big blow was a two-run homer by Zack Short. Wily Peralta earned the win, giving up three runs over seven innings.

The Tigers continue that series at Texas tonight. José Ureña will start against Dane Dunning. Coverage begins at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit will have a new coach at third base this evening. Current coach Chip Hale has been named the head coach at his alma mater, the University of Arizona. Bench coach George Lombard will take over at the hot corner.

Outfielder Daz Cameron was scratched from last night’s game after he crashed into the outfield wall during pregame warm-ups. He suffered a sprained toe, and will likely miss a few days.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the New York Mets 4-2. Brandon Woodruff pitched into the seventh and gave up just four hits, but was charged with all four runs, and took the loss. Omar Narváez homered.

The Brewers play in New York again tonight. Brett Anderson will return from the injured list to pitch against Jacob deGrom.

Horseshoes

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last night…
• Harter’s Party Store defeated Dreamland Two 7-2.
• Bucko’s edged Calumet Electronics 5-4.
• Dreamland One downed Rocky’s 6-3.
• Ahmeek Fire Department got past Drift Inn 6-3.
• 41 Lumber beat Loading Zone 7-2.
• Calumet One blanked L and L 9-0. The sweep moved Calumet One into first place after seven weeks of competition, one victory ahead of Dreamland One.
