Kings Win Goalfest at Hancock – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last evening, Calumet outscored Hancock 9-5. The Copper Kings broke open a close contest with five goals in the second period. Dean Loukus and Scott Loukus each had a hat trick plus two assists for Calumet. Tanner Rowe, Gabe Coppo and Alex Mattila also scored. Mason Mikesch scored twice for the Bulldogs, and Austin Salani, Chad Nordstrom and Petr Anderson added one goal each. Alex Studebaker made 31 saves for Calumet, as the Bulldogs actually outshot the Kings 36-28.

In high school boys basketball last night…
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City shut down Calumet 63-38 to remain unbeaten.
– Houghton fell to Ishpeming 88-83.
– Jeffers shut down Republic-Michigamme 59-18.
– Chassell slipped past Wakefield-Marenisco 63-57.
– L’Anse outpointed Baraga 50-36 in the Battle of the Bay. Eli Ostermeyer led the Purple Hornets with 16 points, and Terry Reed added 14. Steele Jondreau had 14 for the Vikings.
– Ewen-Trout Creek got past Ontonagon 61-54.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team has introduced a new recruit. Logan Geissler is a 6’1″ guard who’s averaging 15 points per game for Bay Port High School in Green Bay. He’s a former conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team entertains Gogebic Community College this evening at 6:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

MSU

Michigan State University head football coach Mark Dantonio is retiring after 13 seasons. Dantonio made the announcement yesterday. He is the Spartans’ all-time coaching wins leader, but the program has faltered in recent years.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Buffalo Sabres tomorrow. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons entertain the Phoenix Suns this evening. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Snowmobile

The Valley Sno Drifters will hold their 34th annual all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner fundraiser Sunday between noon and 6:00 at the Dreamland Restaurant in Bootjack. The cost is $9.00. Proceeds will support maintenance and grooming of the Point Mills, Bootjack, Mud Lake, Rice Lake and Gray trails.
