High School
The Calumet High School volleyball team’s fine season ended last night with a tight 23-25, 16-25, 24-25 loss to Traverse City Saint Francis in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Congratulations to the Copper Kings for another great tournament run.
In high school hockey last night, the Houghton Gremlins put six goals in the net in the latter half of the first period and skated to a 10-0, two period victory in the opening game for both teams. Nine different Gremlins scored in the contest. Wyatt Liston led with two goals and two assists. Will Stier got credit for the shutout with five saves in his first varsity game for Houghton.
MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team will make its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference playoff appearance since 2009 at top-seeded Ferris State this evening at 7:00.
A future Michigan Tech hockey player will represent the United States in the upcoming World Junior A Challenge. Mitch Reinke from Stillwater, Minnesota, is currently a member of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the United States Hockey League. Reinke has been named to the U.S. Junior Select Team, which is comprised exclusively of USHL players.

The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team lost its season-opener to Minnesota-Duluth 79-67 last night.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Washington Capitals tonight. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Detroit has sent forward Tomas Jurco to the Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning assignment. Jurco hasn’t appeared in a game since October 30th. He remains on the 23-man roster.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons broke their four-game losing streak with a 104-99 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers last night. Andre Drummond had 25 points and 18 rebounds for Detroit, and made some critical free throws in the final moments. Cleveland’s LeBron James scored 30, and passed Jerry West to take over 19th place on the NBA’s career scoring list. The Pistons visit the Timberwolves Friday night.
NFL
The Detroit Lions will finish the season without cornerback Josh Wilson. Wilson was placed on injured reserve yesterday, after he was hurt in Sunday’s win over the Green Bay Packers. There are reports that Detroit may bring Bill Bentley back to replace him. Bentley was released in June, after tearing his ACL last season.
