Kings to State Finals! Friday Sports Wrap

The Calumet girls basketball team defeated top-ranked Laingsburg 30-26 in the state tournament semi-finals yesterday. The Copper Kings held the Wolfpack to just three points in the fourth quarter. Clara Loukus led Calumet with 10 points. The Kings will face Flint Hamady in the finals tomorrow at 4:00. Hamady edged Ypsilanti Arbor Prep 50-46.

The Copper Kings will be joined in the finals by another Upper Peninsula team. Perennial powerhouse Saint Ignace advanced with a 59-50 victory over Frankfort, The Saints will face Pittsford in the Class D championship game tomorrow morning at 10:00.

All of the finals will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit.

The All-State High School Alpine Ski teams were announced yesterday. Congratulations to Ally Fenton and Jenna Stein, who were named to the first team… and Kathrine Jarvis, who was an honorable mention.

Pioneers Take Gibson Cup Game One

The Portage Lake Pioneers came from behind in the third period to beat the Calumet Wolverines 7-6 in  game one of the Gibson Cup Series last night. Alex Roy scored the game-winner – his second goal of the night. Pete Rouleau had a goal and three assists for the Pioneers. Mike Babcock and Eric Bausano each scored two goals for the Wolverines. The best-of-three set continues tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum. If a third game is needed, it will be played tomorrow at 5:00 Dee Stadium. The Michigan Tech hockey team faces Bowling Green in the semifinals of the WCHA hockey tournament. Faceoff is at 5:07 Eastern Time. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit Plus. Minnesota State and Ferris State will meet in the second semifinal tonight. The championship game for the Broadmoor Trophy will be played tomorrow night.

Huskies’ co-captain Tanner Kero has been named as one of the 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award. The Hancock native was the WCHA points leader this season. Fan voting is one of the criteria that will be used to select the winner. Find out how to vote for Kero here.

Tech goalie Jamie Phillips is one of five finalists for the Mike Richter Award for the nation’s top college goaltender. Phillips is tied for first in the country with 27 wins, and is in the top-five in several more categories. Fans do not get to vote in that competition.

Finlandia Softball Drops Two
After earning two wins on the opening day of the Cobber Classic in St. Paul on Wednesday, the Finlandia softball team dropped both of its games yesterday. The Lions fell to Concordia-Moorehead 5-3, and Bethany Lutheran 2-0. Adrianna Vasquez hit her third home run of the Classic.

NHL – Red Wings Fall to Panthers
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Florida Panthers 3-1 last night. Petr Mrazek stopped 29 shots for Detroit, but took the loss in goal. The Wings skate at Tampa tonight. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Prepare for Bulls
The Detroit Pistons host the Bulls tomorrow night.

MLB
Anibal Sanchez struck out six over five scoreless innings, as the Tigers and Nationals played to a 0-0 tie yesterday afternoon. The Tigers face the Yankees this afternoon. Alfredo Simon will start.

Mike Fiers was scratched as yesterday’s starter for the Brewers because of some shoulder discomfort. He threw on the sideline, and team officials say the problem doesn’t appear to be serious. Tyler Thornburg started instead, and took the loss as Milwaukee fell to the Giants 3-2. The Brewers will play the Diamondbacks this afternoon.

Milwaukee has picked up its option on manager Ron Roenicke’s contract for the 2016 season.
