In high school softball yesterday…
– Calumet took two from Houghton, 9-5 and 6-5. Vera Peterson, Clara Loukus and Ally Spence each had two hits in the opener for the Copper Kings. In the second game, Houghton’s Anna Gafney slugged a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score. Calumet’s May Beiring singled home Anne Sturos in the bottom of the inning to win the game for the Kings. Beiring had four hits. Emily Erkkila was the winning pitcher in both games.

In softball today…
– Calumet entertain Superior Central.

MLB
Jordan Zimmermann gave up seven runs, but the Detroit Tigers still managed to claim a 10-8 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Detroit got off to a big lead, scoring eight runs in the first inning. Ian Kinsler homered on the first pitch of the game, and Jose Iglesias plated three with a bases-loaded double. The Twins came back, and tied the contest on J.D. Martinez’ error in the top of the seventh. Nick Castellanos put Detroit back on top with a homer in the bottom of the inning, and Martinez hit one out in the eighth to provide the final margin of victory. Manager Brad Ausmus was thrown out of the game in the fourth inning while protesting a called third strike on Castellanos. Ausmus was so irritated that he threw his sweatshirt on home plate.
The Tigers host the Twins again tonight. Mike Pelfrey will start against Phil Hughes. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and open a series against the Cubs in Chicago tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs, the Penguins edged the Lightning 3-2 in overtime to tie the Eastern Conference final at one win per team. The Sharks and Blues play tonight – St. Louis leads the Western Conference final one game to none.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Thunder opened the Western Conference final with a 108-102 victory over the Warriors last night. The Raptors and Cavaliers begin the Eastern Conference final tonight.
