In high school football Friday night…
2016-10-14 Calumet FB– Calumet clinched its second-straight WestPAC title with a 49-2 win at Ironwood. The Copper Kings scored three times in the first quarter, and were never challenged. Rory Anderson scored three touchdowns, including one on an 80-yard kickoff return to start the second half. Grant Johnson scored on a 52-yard run. Travis Ojala and Brock Poyhonen also ran for touchdowns, and Trevor Johnson caught a touchdown pass.
– Hancock’s playoff hopes died with a 34-7 loss at West Iron County. The Bulldogs turned the ball over eight times.
– Houghton fell to Hurley 20-14.
– L’Anse earned a 26-12 homecoming victory over Northland Pines.
– Baraga suffered a 59-6 homecoming loss to Engadine. The Trojans’ Daniel Nocerini carried the ball eight times for 320 yards and seven touchdowns.
– Ontonagon fell at Forest Park 64-6.

In high school volleyball yesterday, the result of Chassell’s match at Dollar Bay was not reported. Today, Baraga, Calumet, Gladstone, Gwinn, Hancock, Ironwood, Ishpeming, Kingsford, L’Anse, Marquette, and West Iron County play at the Houghton Invitational.

The Michigan Tech hockey team broke into the win column with a convincing 7-3 victory over Alabama-Huntsville Friday night.

With Tech alum and former NHL All-Star MVP John Scott in the stands, the Huskies built a commanding 6-0 lead over the first two periods. The Chargers scored three late goals against Matt Wintjes, who stopped 21 shots. Seven different MTU players scored.  The Huskies will host Alabama-Huntsville again tonight. The first 1,000 fans who check in will receive a special edition MacNaughton Cup shirt. Faceoff is at 7:07 at MacInnes Arena.

The Tech volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 17-25, 20-25) to Cedarville in its opening match at the Midwest Regional Crossover event in Chicago Friday. Aubrey Ficek led all players with 20 kills. The Huskies will face Quincy this morning, and Rockhurst this afternoon.

The Huskies soccer team erupted for five goals in the second half, and cruised to a 5-0 victory at Lake Erie Friday. Kirsen Hudak had to make just three saves to earn the shutout in goal. Jacqueline Mielke scored twice for the Huskies, who play at Walsh Sunday afternoon.

The Tech women’s tennis team entertains Tiffin this morning at 10:00, and Findlay tomorrow morning at 10:00.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost 2-0 to Bemidji State Friday night. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team split a pair of matches in Minneapolis Friday evening. The Lions Finlandia Lions New Logodefeated Mount Mary 3-1 (19-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-15), then fell 3-2 (17-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19, 9-15) to North Central.

Both Finlandia soccer teams play their final home matches this afternoon. The women host Mount Mary University at noon at McAfee Field. The men face Robert Morris-Springfield at 2:00.

The Lions football team plays at Presentation College this afternoon.

The Detroit Red Wings  will visit the Florida Panthers tonight. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons continue their preseason schedule at Philadelphia tonight.

MLB
Francisco Lindor’s two-run homer lifted the Cleveland Indians to a 2-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the opening game of the American League Championship Series Friday night. Game two will be played this afternoon in Cleveland. The National League Championship Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs starts this evening at Wrigley Field.

NFL
The Detroit Lions host the Los Angeles Rams in a 1:00 game tomorrow. The banged-up Lions will be without tight end Eric Ebron, linebacker DeAndre Levy, defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, and running back Theo Riddick. Check the full injury list here.

The Green Bay Packers entertain the Dallas Cowboys in a 4:25 game. The Pack will again play without cornerback Sam Shields, who is still suffering concussion symptoms. Tight end Jared Cook and safety Chris Banjo are also out. See the full injury report here.

David Higgins and Craig Drew will take a narrow 1:09 lead into the second day of competition at the Lake Superior Performance Rally today. LSPR 2016 LogoTravis Pastrana and Robbie Durant are in second place. Seamus Burke and Martin Brady are six minutes off the pace. Higgins has already clinched his sixth consecutive Rally America season title. See the cars at the Parc Exposé this morning at 9:15 at L’Anse Waterfront Park. The race resumes when the first car leaves the waterfront at 10:40. The final stage of the race will be a sprint along Lakeshore Drive in Houghton that will start at 5:10 this afternoon.
