– In Class D, Dollar Bay claimed the conference championship with a 57-45 victory over Chassell. Jacob Iacono led Dollar Bay with 19 points. Hunter Rautiola scored 12 for the Panthers. The Blue Bolts will face unbeaten, two-time defending state champion North Central in the regional semifinals Monday night. The game will tip off at 8:00 at Negaunee. The second seeded Michigan Tech hockey team erupted for four goals in the third period, and defeated third-seed Minnesota State 4-1 in the opening game of the semifinals of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament Friday night. Mark Auk gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the first period, but the Mavericks quickly tied the game. After a scoreless second frame, Reid Sturos scored the game-winner three-and-a-half minutes into the third. Jake Jackson, Gavin Gould and Dane Birks added insurance tallies. Alex Gillies and Alex Smith each had two assists. Angus Redmond made 22 saves. The best-of-three series continues at the John macInnes Student Ice Arena tonight, and tomorrow night, if needed. Games start at 7:07.
Bowling Green upset top-seed Bemidji State in the opening game of the other WCHA semifinal.

Shortly after former Northern Michigan University hockey coach Walt Kyle was fired yesterday, he was arrested by Marquette County sheriff’s deputies. A spokesman for the sheriff’s department says Kyle has been charged with one count of residential mortgage fraud of $100,000 or less, and one count of forgery of documents affecting real property. Kyle’s attorney, George Hyde, released a statement maintaining Kyle’s innocence, and blaming the situation on his recent divorce. The Finlandia University baseball team plays at an indoor tournament in Milwaukee this weekend. The Lions will face Northland College this morning… the Milwaukee School of Engineering this afternoon and again tomorrow morning… and Martin Luther College tomorrow afternoon.

The result of Friday’s game between the Portage Lake Pioneers and the Eagle River Falcons was not reported. The Pioneers will host the Falcons again tonight at 7:30 at the Dee.
The Calumet Wolverines fell behind 3-0 in the first period, and lost 6-3 at Mosinee Friday night. The Wolverines skate at DePere tonight.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings broke their four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Friday night. Tomas Tatar scored the game-winner in the second period, and added an insurance goal in the third. The Wings host the New York Rangers tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers’ spring struggles continued Friday, with a 6-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. After throwing a scoreless first inning, Jordan Zimmermann gave up four hits and walk in the second. He left the game with just one out, and was charged with five runs, raising his spring earned run average to 10.13. Justin Upton homered for Detroit. The Tigers have lost eight straight games, and will face the Yankees this afternoon.
Half of the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Chicago White Sox 4-3 Friday. Tommy Milone pitched two scoreless innings, but left while allowing two runs in the third. The other half of the Brewers fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-3. Chase Anderson gave up a run over three innings. Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered. Milwaukee will face the San Diego Padres this afternoon.
NFL
The Green Bay Packers have signed veteran tight end Martellus Bennett to a three-year contract. Bennett is 30 years old. He played for the Patriots in the Super Bowl this season, after New England obtained him in a trade with the Chicago Bears. The move means Green Bay will not re-sign free agent tight end Jared Cook.
The Detroit Lions have released linebacker DeAndre Levy. Once considered a rising star, Levy has been plagued by injuries, and played just six games after signing a four-year, 33-million dollar contract after the 2014 season.
Great Bear Chase
The Great Bear Chase will be held today at the Swedetown Trails. The Chase includes 50k, 25k and 10k freestyle and classic Nordic events, and a 50k skiathlon. For the schedule and full details, click here.
