Kings, Lakes Earn Softball Split – Friday Sports Wrap

The resurgent Detroit Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics 7-3 yesterday. Anthony Gose broke out of his slump, sparking a four-run third inning with a double, and clubbing a home run as the Tigers added three runs in the fourth. Anibal Sanchez pitched 5-2/3rds innings to get the win. He walked seven, but struck out nine. After taking three out of four from the A’s, the Tigers will open a weekend series at Minnesota tonight. Michael Fulmer will make his major league debut for Detroit, filling in for Shane Greene, who is out with a blister on his pitching hand. Phil Hughes will start for the Twins. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Chicago Cubs 7-2. Taylor Jungmann struggled again, giving up five runs before leaving in the fourth inning. The Brewers return home to host the Marlins tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Adam Conley.

In last night’s only NHL playoff game, the Capitals edged the Penguins 4-3 in overtime in the opening game of their second-round series.

The Detroit Red Wings have announced that the new home they’re building in downtown will be called Little Caesar’s Arena.

In last night’s only NBA match, the Hawks advanced to the second round with a 104-92 victory over the Celtics, winning their series 4-2.

High School
In high school softball yesterday…
– Calumet and Lake Linden-Hubbell split a doubleheader. The Lakes took the opener 7-5. Abbi Sutherland was the winning pitcher, and Emily Erkkila took the loss. Erkkila got the win in Calumet’s 17-8 victory in the nightcap. Celia Peterson homered for Copper Kings in that game, and Jana Hendrickson hit one out for Lake Linden.

Finlandia
After splitting their two games at Northland University on Wednesday, the Finlandia University baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader against the Lumberjacks in Hancock yesterday. The first game was a varsity contest, which Finlandia won 9-4. All nine of the Lions’ runs scored in the third inning, with help from five Northland errors. Luke Paul struck out five, and got the win. The second game was a JV contest, which the Lions won 12-11.

Lions-Packers FeatureIn the first round of the NFL draft last night, the Detroit Lions used the 16th pick to select offensive lineman Taylor Decker from Ohio State. The Packers chose defensive lineman Kenny Clark from UCLA with the 27th pick. As expected, the Los Angeles Rams used the first pick to select California quarterback Jared Goff. North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz went to the Philadelphia Eagles with the second pick. The second and third rounds of the draft will be held tonight. The Lions hold the 15th pick in the second round, and the 33rd pick in the third. The Packers have the 26th pick in the second round, and the 25th pick in the third.
