Kings, Hornets Win; Vikings Fall – Saturday Sports Wrap

MLB – Tigers Win in 12
Dixon Machado’s single in the bottom of the 12th inning drove in the winning run, as the Detroit Tigers edged the Kansas City Royals 5-4 last night. The Tigers were an out away from winning the game in the ninth. With a 3-1 lead, Justin Verlander gave up a two-out single, and was replaced by Alex Wilson. Wilson gave up a two-run homer to tie the game. Kansas City surged ahead in the top of the 12th with a run off Drew VerHagen. In the bottom of the 12th, Royals’ closer Greg Holland walked in a run to tie the game, then gave up Machado’s game-winning single. Game details are here.

The Tigers host the Royals again tomorrow night. Matt Boyd will start against Edinson Volquez. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Khris Davis and Jason Rogers homered, but the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Saint Louis Cardinals 5-3 last night. Zach Davies gave up three runs over six innings, and took the loss. Game details are here.

The Brewers continue that home set against the Cincinnati Reds tonight. Taylor Jungmann will pitch against Josh Smith.

In high school football Friday night…
– Calumet romped to a 44-14 Homecoming victory over Houghton. See video highlights from the game here.
– L’Anse stopped Hancock 32-13. Purple Hornets’ quarterback Brandon Koski hit Michael Anderson with a 26-yard touchdown pass, and connected with Andre Richard for a 39-yard score. Ryan Beauprey rushed for 157 yards.
– Baraga suffered its first loss of the season, 46-28 to Stephenson.
– Ontonagon fell to Rapid River 40-14.

The Team Copper Country U18 hockey squad is in Chicago for the CSDHL Showcase this weekend. Friday night, Team CC defeated the Chicago Bruins 3-1. Reid Pietila scored twice, and Teddy Randell once. Ian Carroll was in net. The Chicago Bruins are the defending State of Illinois champions in Midget AA U18. Team CC plays two games today, and one more Sunday morning.

MTU Huskies LogoThe Michigan Tech football team puts its unbeaten record on the line at Saginaw Valley State University this afternoon.

The MTU volleyball team swept Lake Superior State 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-17) Friday night. Details are here. The Huskies’ 9-0 start is tied with the 1994 team for the best in school history. Tech will host Northwood today at 3:00.

The MTU soccer team outshot Ashland 21-4 Friday, but lost the game 1-0. Details are here.

The Tech Cross Country team ran at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing Friday. Results are here.

The MTU men’s tennis team plays at the ITA Regional in Grand Rapids this weekend. The women’s tennis team plays at Northwood this afternoon, and at Saginaw Valley State tomorrow morning.

Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia University football team plays at Wisconsin-Whitewater this afternoon. The Warhawks are rated first in the nation in the latest D3Football.com poll.

In Ann Arbor yesterday, the Finlandia volleyball lost to Concordia 3-0 (16-25, 15-25, 16-25 – details here), fell to Rochester College 3-0 (13-25, 12-25, 9-25), and lost to Marygrove College 3-0 (16-25, 20-25, 17-25 – details here). The Lions travel to Grand Rapids to take on Grace Bible College and Moody Bible Institute today.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team hosts Grace Bible College today at 1:00. The men’s team will host Robert Morris-Lake County on Sunday at 3:30. The women’s game scheduled for Sunday against RMLC has been canceled.

NFL
The Detroit Lions play at Minnesota tomorrow. Kickoff is at 1:00.

The Green Bay Packers host the Seattle Seahawks in the Sunday night game. Right tackle Bryan Bulaga will miss the contest, after suffering a knee injury during practice this week. Team officials don’t think he’ll need surgery. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The opening day of training camp for the Detroit Red Wings could have gone better. Veteran Darren Helm and rookie Jerome Verrier collided while skating at top speed in the first on-ice drill of the day. Helm has a concussion, and will be out for at least a week. Verrier suffered a broken leg, and is scheduled to undergo surgery today to have a rod inserted.
