In Class D girls tournament basketball play in Ontonagon last night…
Chassell Panthers Logo– Chassell stunned Jeffers 39-37 in overtime. The Panthers held the Jets without a field goal until midway through the second quarter. Jeffers rallied to tie the game at halftime, but Chassell refused to wilt, and pulled off the upset of the regular-season champions of the Copper Country division of the Copper Mountain Conference. Sophomores Milly Hoskins and Sydney Danison each scored 15 for the Panthers. Julia Nordstrom led the Jets with 14. Chassell will face Lake Linden-Hubbell in the first district semi-final tomorrow at 6:00.
Baraga Schools Logo – Baraga took an early lead, and held off Dollar Bay 41-37. Justice Kinnunen led the Vikings with 12 points. Dollar Bay’s Carli Daavettila led all scorers with 18 points, including the 1,000th point of her high school career in her final game.  The Vikings will meet Ontonagon tomorrow at 7:30. L'Anse Purple Hornets LogoIn Class C…
Calumet Copper Kings Logo – Unbeaten Calumet opened a five-point halftime lead, and went on to defeat Hancock 41-34. The Bulldogs close a fine season with a record of 16-5.
– L’Anse eliminated Ironwood 54-45. The Copper Kings and Purple Hornets will meet for the district title tomorrow night at 7:00 at Calumet.

In Class B, Kingsford edged Menominee 71-69. The Flivvers will face Escanaba tomorrow night. Houghton had a first-round bye, and will host Gladstone tomorrow evening at 7:00. Hear that game on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

– Calumet visits Houghton.
– Hancock entertains L’Anse.
– Chassell tip off at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City travels to Republic-Michigamme.

– Ewen-Trout Creek travels to Wakefield-Marenisco.

GLIAC LogoThe Michigan Tech women’s basketball team will open the GLIAC tournament at home tonight against Grand Valley State. The Huskies are seeded third, and the Lakers sixth. Tip-off is at 6:00 at the SDC.

Kyle Monroe of the Huskies’ men’s team has been named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year. Monroe compiled nine games of 20 points or more, and finished sixth in the league in scoring. He set a Tech record for most points by a freshman.

After sweeping Alaska over the weekend, the MTU hockey team has climbed to 13th in both the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.

The NMU women’s basketball team is seeded eighth, and will open the GLIAC tournament on the road against top-seeded Ashland.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team is in Clermont, Florida, for their annual early-spring trip. The Lions will face Immaculata University this morning at 9:00, and York College of Pennsylvania at 11:00.

Pavel Datsyuk’s unassisted goal in overtime lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars last night. Andreas Athanasiou scored both of Detroit’s goals in regulation. Jimmy Howard earned his first win in nearly three months. The Wings will host the Blackhawks tomorrow night. We’ll join the game after Houghton girls basketball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons play at San Antonio tomorrow night.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers defeated Florida Southern College 7-2 in their annual spring exhibition yesterday. Prospect JaCoby Jones hit a three-run homer for Detroit. The Tigers host the Pittsburgh Pirates this afternoon in their Grapefruit League opener.

Great Bear Chase 2016 LogoOnline registration continues for the UP Health System Great Bear Chase. The Chase will be held Saturday on the Swedetown Trails. The schedule includes a 50k Skiathlon… and Freestyle and Classic events of 50k, 25k and 10k. Last-minute registration will take place Friday from 4:30 until 9:00 at Calumet High School.
