High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Houghton outshot Kingsford, 56-4, as they blasted the Flivvers 6-1 last night. The Gremlins broke the game open with four goals in the second period. Cole Jepsen and Reid Pietila each scored twice, with an assist. Joe Berglund stopped 50 for the Flivvers. Dmitri Kochan had to make only three saves to get the win for Houghton.
– Calumet built a 6-0 lead after two periods, and hung on to beat Marquette 7-4 last night. Rory Anderson had two goals and three assists, and Robert Erkkila had one goal and three assists.
In high school girls basketball last night…
– Houghton bombed L’Anse 72-39. Tawna Ryynanen scored 18 and grabbed eight rebounds for the Gremlins.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Watersmeet 59-51. Abby Sutherland and Kaitlyn Gast each scored 16 for the Lakes.
– Calumet trounced Jeffers 68-31.
– Hancock won at Bessemer 52-23.
– Baraga knocked off Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 45-28.
– Chassell shut down Ewen-Trout Creek 50-24.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Washington Capitals 3-2 in a shootout last night. Goals by Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Jurco gave Detroit a 2-1 lead after two periods. Alex Ovechkin’s power play goal tied it midway through the third. Jimmy Howard made 40 saves. Nine of the last 11 Detroit games have gone into overtime. The Wings entertain the Montreal Canadiens tomorrow night.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons will host the Memphis Grizzlies tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers have signed reliever Mark Lowe to a two-year, 11-million dollar contract. Lowe Lowe turned in a 1.96 ERA this past season for the Mariners and Blue Jays. He struck out 61 batters over 55 innings. He’ll likely be used as an eighth-inning setup man for new closer Francisco Rodriguez.
Former Detroit reliever Joakim Soria has signed a three-year deal with the Kansas City Royals.
