Kings Fall to U-D Jesuit, But Claim Miner’s Helmet – Sunday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey yesterday…
– Bay Port downed Houghton 4-2.
– U of D Jesuit rebounded from their 8-0 shutout at the hands of Calumet Friday night, and defeated the Copper Kings 3-2. Calumet was held scoreless until Alex Mattila found the net twice in the third period. The Copper Kings won the Miner’s Helmet by outscoring the Cubs 10-3 in the two-game series.
– Jeffers defeated Medford 4-0 at the Merrill/East Invitational in Wisconsin. Evan Larson had a hat trick for the Jets, and Logan Lloyd also scored. Noah Nettell made 15 saves to get the win.

In boys basketball yesterday afternoon, Chassell downed Lake Linden-Hubbell 65-59. Karl Rautiola scored 16 for the Panthers. Carter Crouch of the Lakes led all scorers with 19 points.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team scored three goals in the final four minutes, to claim a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over entertain Northland College last evening. The Lumberjacks scored twice in the first period. Finlandia’s comeback began with a Kendall Bolen-Porter tally midway through the second frame. Collin Gamrat, Alex Rezansoff and Hunter Kero scored in the game-ending flurry. Santeri Seppinen stopped 24 shots to get the win in net.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost to Adrian College 6-2 yesterday afternoon. Annah Smiddy made a heroic 68 saves, as the Lions were outshot 74-11. Bella Abear and Catlin Siegel scored for FinnU. The Lions host Adrian again today at 2:30.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team lost at Gogebic Community College 75-51 yesterday.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 3-0 at Bemidji State University last night. Robbie Beydoun stopped 19 shots, and took the loss in goal.

The NMU hockey squad had the weekend off.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team overpowered Davenport University 70-44 yesterday. The Huskies held the Panthers to just three points in the final quarter. Ellie Mackay led a balanced attack with 14 points.

The Tech men’s team lost to Davenport 77-68. Bryan Heath scored 20 for the Huskies, who gave up 51 points in the second half.

The Northern Michigan University women’s hoops team stunned ninth-ranked Grand Valley State University 56-43 yesterday. The Wildcats men’s team defeated the Lakers 70-61.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the Fond du Lac Bears 10-4 last night.

The Calumet Wolverines fell 7-3 to the West Bend Bombers last evening.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings visit the Vancouver Canucks this afternoon. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 3:40 on KBear 102.3.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons dropped a 103-101 heartbreaker to the Sacramento Kings last night. Buddy Hield’s off-balance three-pointer with three seconds remaining was the game-winner. Blake Griffin led Detroit with 38 points, and Zaza Pachulia snared 12 rebounds. Detroit played without Andre Drummond, who is going through concussion protocol after taking a blow to the face in Friday’s game. The Pistons visit the Washington Capitals for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee tomorrow. Pregame coverage begins at 1:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
The NFL Conference Championships will be decided today. The Los Angeles Rams will face the New Orleans Saints for the NFC title at 3:05. The New England Patriots will play the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC crown at 6:40. Hear both games on 99.3 The Lift.
