In high school football…
– Calumet opened its season with a dominant 48-6 victory over the Gogebic Miners at the Bessemer field. The Copper Kings’ ground game produced some long touchdown runs – Travis Ojala scored on 61-yard and 66-yard rambles. Sam Erkkila broke out with 60 and 52-yard runs, as well as a one-yard plunge. Trevor Hendrickson scored on a 24-yard play, and Matt Ojala ran in from 18 yards. The Miners struggled against a stout Calumet defensive line. Their only touchdown came on a 17-yard run by Sethe Cole late in the third quarter.
– Houghton struggled in a 42-0 loss to Westwood.
– Hancock scored the winning touchdown with 22 seconds remaining in a 28-27 victory over L’Anse.
– Rapid River scored a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, and shut out Ontonagon 38-0.

MLB
The Chicago White Sox scored six runs in the eighth inning, and defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-3 last night. The meltdown by Joe Jiménez and Shane Greene spoiled a fine starting effort by Michael Fulmer. In his return from the D-L, Fulmer pitched 4-2/3rds scoreless innings before reaching a 70-pitch limit.

The Tigers host the White Sox again this evening. Ryan Carpenter start against Lucas Giolito. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers scored three runs in the 15th inning, and edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 last night. Milwaukee scored four runs in the first on homers by Christian Yelich and Mike Moustakas. The Pirates worked their way back, and tied the game with a run off Joakim Soria in the top of the ninth. Pittsburgh surged ahead with two in the top of the 15th off Jordan Lyles. The Crew loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the 15th. Erik Kratz drove two home with a single, and Orlando Arcia’s single plated the game-winner.

The Brewers host the Pittsburgh Pirates again tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against Jameson Taillon.

MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team opened its season with a pair of wins at the Alaska-Anchorage Invitational yesterday. The Huskies defeated Alaska 3-2, and and then cruised past Western New Mexico 3-1. Olivia Ghormley had 17 kills in the opening match, and Mariah Sherman recorded 16 in the nightcap. The Huskies face Barton College this afternoon, and the host Seawolves tonight.

L’Anse alumnus Cody Goldsworthy will be one of four Huskies football co-captains this season. Goldsworthy was Tech’s Defensive Lineman of the Year last season. He joins offensive lineman Jeremy Bell from Negaunee, defensive back Graham Hubbell, and receiver Jacob Wenzlick as the official team leaders.

NFL
The Detroit Lions scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, and pulled out a 33-30 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in preseason play last night. The late surge came after the first-team offense produced only two field goals in the first half. Jake Rudock and Matt Cassell each threw touchdown passes, Theo Riddick ran for a score, and Brandon Powell returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown. The oddest play of the game happened late in the first half, when Tampa’s Adam Humphries caught a 62-yard field goal attempt by Matt Prater deep in the endzone, and returned it 109 yards for a score.

The Green Bay Packers dropped a listless 13-6 decision to the Raiders in Oakland last night. Oakland scored 10 points in the final quarter.
