Kings Conclude Perfect Conference Season – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…

  • Calumet closed out a perfect conference season with a 7-1 victory over Marquette. The Copper Kings got two goals from Brent Loukus, and one each from Tanner Rowe, Dean Loukus, Gabe Coppo, Nolan Jenich and Rylan Anderson. Alex Studebaker got the win in net, as the Kings outshot the Redmen 41-13.
  • Houghton ended its regular season with an 8-1 victory over Escanaba. P.J. Donnelly had a hat trick, Brendan Erickson scored twice, and Tucker Tapani, Jett Heinonen and Carson Stevens each found the net once. The Gremlins outshot the Eskymoes 42-18.
  • Jeffers lost to Kingsford 5-2.

The regular hockey season wraps up tomorrow, as Jeffers skates at Escanaba. The playoffs begin Tuesday, and we’ll broadcast every tournament game involving our local teams on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In girls high school basketball last night…

  • Houghton fell to Chassell 53-41.
  • Hancock shaded Ontonagon 28-26.
  • Calumet shut down Lake Linden-Hubbell 65-27. Elli Djerf and Ava Anderson each scored 14 for the Copper Kings. Mackenzie LaPage led the Lakes with nine.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost to Ewen-Trout Creek 88-14.
  • L’Anse outscored Jeffers 66-40.
  • Baraga smothered Republic-Michigamme 70-19.

In girls play tonight, Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Watersmeet.

On the girls schedule tomorrow, Baraga entertains Lake Linden-Hubbell in a make-up contest from February 7th. The JV game will start at 1:00, with the varsity at 2:30.

In boys hoops last night…

  • Houghton fell to Iron Mountain 79-52. The Mountaineers closed out an unbeaten regular season.
  • L’Anse dropped a 65-54 decision to Ishpeming.
  • Calumet lost a 54-53 heartbreaker at West Iron County. Brayden Nelson’s three-pointer at the buzzer won it for the Wycons.

The boys regular season concludes tonight…

  • Chassell tips off at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City in a game that will decide the Copper Mountain Conference Copper Country Division championship. Our broadcast will begin around 7:00 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
  • Hancock welcomes West Iron County.
  • Calumet plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
  • Jeffers visits L’Anse.
  • Baraga entertains Watersmeet.
  • Ontonagon hosts Bessemer.

The boys tournament begins Monday. We will broadcast all of the Division Two and Division Three games involving Houghton, Calumet and L’Anse on KBear 102.3 and our sister stations.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team opens the American Collegiate Athletic Association tournament tomorrow in Alfred, New York. The second-seeded Lions will face Valley Forge University at 2:00 in the second semifinal. Top-seeded Thomas More University will take on Alfred State University in the first semifinal. The championship game will be played Sunday.

The Finlandia University softball season begins this weekend at the annual Dome Tournament in Marquette. The Lions will play Marian University tomorrow evening at 7:00, and Edgewood College at 9:00. On Sunday, the Lions will face the College of Saint Scholastica at 10:00, and Wisconsin-Superior at 2:00. We will broadcast all four games on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

MTU/NMU

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team got off to a quick start, and cruised past Davenport University 72-53 last night. Elizabeth Kelliher scored 17 points for the Huskies, who have won nine in a row.

The Tech men’s team lost to Davenport 72-59. Bryan Heath had 17 for the Huskies.

Both Tech teams play at Grand Valley State University tomorrow.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops squads lost at Grand Valley last evening – the women 50-37, and the men 85-62. Both NMU teams will visit Davenport tomorrow.

The MTU hockey team hosts Alaska-Anchorage tonight and tomorrow night. Faceoffs are at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The NMU hockey squad entertains Lake Superior State University tonight and tomorrow night.

GHL

The Calumet Wolverines entertain the De Pere Deacons tomorrow night at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

The Portage Lake Pioneers will welcome the Deacons Sunday at noon.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will host the Minnesota Wild tonight. Pregame coverage will start at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons return to action tonight, when they visit the Atlanta Hawks.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers will play Southeastern University in their annual spring exhibition game this afternoon. Detroit’s usual exhibition opponent, Florida Southern University, had a conflict. The Tigers will begin their Grapefruit League schedule tomorrow against the Toronto Blue Jays. Listen for Tigers baseball again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers will start their Cactus league campaign tomorrow against the Chicago Cubs.
