High School
In high school football Friday night…
– Calumet claimed the WestPAC title with a 34-14 victory over L’Anse. Robert Erkkila scored three rushing touchdowns for the Copper Kings. Russ Bjorn threw a TD pass to Peter Anderson, and ran for another score. L’Anse quarterback Brandon Koski tossed touchdown passes to Michael Anderson and Ryan Beauprey. Calumet improves to 5-0 in the conference (5-2 overall), and needs just one more win to claim a playoff spot. The Copper Kings host winless Ironwood next Friday, and close the season at home against Gladstone in two weeks. The Purple Hornets fall to 4-1 in the conference (4-3 overall), and need to win both of their final games against Northland Pines and Munising to guarantee a playoff berth. The Team Copper Country U18 hockey squad is in Minnesota, for a game against the Rochester, Minnesota AAA team in Duluth today, and games tonight and tomorrow morning at Shattuck St. Mary’s.
MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team opened its schedule with a 5-1 victory over Laurentian University Friday night. Brett Boeing and Brent Baltus each scored twice for the Huskies, who outshot the Voyageurs 42-17. Tech hosts Laurentian again tonight. Faceoff is at 7:07 at MacInnes Arena.
The Tech volleyball team swept Walsh 3-0 (15-25, 19-25, 22-25) Friday afternoon. The Huskies host Malone this afternoon at 4:00.
The MTU women’s tennis team lost 9-0 at Tiffin Friday afternoon, and plays at Findlay this morning.
The unbeaten Michigan Tech football team hosts Northwood in the annual Homecoming game tomorrow. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.
Both Tech cross country teams run at the NCAA Division II Challenge in Chicago today.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Wisconsin Friday night. The Wildcats led until the Badgers tied in the final minute of regulation. Those teams play again tonight in Madison.
The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Malone this afternoon at 1:00.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer suffered its second loss of the season Friday, falling 3-1 at Bethany Lutheran College. The women’s team lost 8-0 at Bethany. The Lady Lions were outshot 57-0.
The Finlandia volleyball team opened its final home tournament of the season Friday night with a 3-1 (23-25, 18-25, 25-17, 21-25) loss to North Central University. Today, they’ll play Grace Bible College at 10:30, and Mount Mary University at 3:00.
The Finlandia football team entertains Presentation College this afternoon at 1:00 at McAfee Field.
NHL
19-year-old rookie Dylan Larkin scored a goal and an assist, as the Detroit Red Wings began their regular-season schedule with a 4-0 victory over former coach Mike Babcock and the Toronto Maple Leafs Friday night. Justin Abdelkader provided the rest of the scoring with a hat trick. Jimmy Howard stopped 22 shots to earn the shutout in goal. The Wings visit the Hurricanes tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons play a preseason NBA game at Milwaukee tonight.
MLB
In the American League Divisional Series yesterday, Texas got past Toronto 6-4 in 12 innings. The Rangers lead the best-of-five series two games to none. The Royals edged the Astros 5-4. That set is tied at a win per team. Both series will resume tomorrow.
In the first games of the National League Divisional Series Friday night, the Cardinals shut out the Cubs 4-0, and the Mets beat the Dodgers 3-1. The second games of each of those series will be played this evening.
Former Detroit Tigers coach Lloyd McClendon was fired yesterday after two seasons as manager of the Seattle Mariners. McClendon brought the M’s within a game of making the playoffs last season, but could not repeat that success this year.
NFL
The unbeaten Packers entertain the Rams in a 1:00 NFL game game tomorrow. The winless Lions host the Cardinals in a 4:05 game. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
