In high school football Friday night…
– Calumet wrapped up a playoff berth by dominating Ironwood 57-0. Robert Erkilla rushed for three touchdowns, including runs of 50 and 52 yards. Russ Bjorn, Grant Johnson, David Kaipio and Rory Anderson also ran for scores. Jack Hyrkas returned a blocked punt 35 yards for a touchdown. See video highlights of the game here.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a 44-30 triumph over North Dickinson.
– Houghton’s slim playoff hopes ended with a 38-18 loss to Gogebic.
– Hancock lost at West Iron County 43-24.
– L’Anse clinched second place in the WestPAC with a 52-16 victory at Northland Pines. The Purple Hornets could earn a playoff berth with a win over Munising next week.
– Baraga shut out Ewen-Trout Creek 49-0.

Today…
– Ontonagon hosts Superior Central.

In high school volleyball Friday, Chassell blanked Dollar Bay 3-0. Calumet, Houghton, Hancock, Baraga, and L’Anse are among the teams playing today at the Houghton Invitational.

Team_CC_LogoThe Team Copper Country U18 hockey team opened the Midget AA Split Season Tournament Friday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over the Holland Ice Dogs. Reid Pietila scored twice. Cory Tourtillot, Danny Hill, Dawson McKay and Chad Dunston also scored. Ian Carroll got the win in net. Friday evening, Team CC defeated Marquette in a shootout. The score and details were not provided. The tournament continues today in Jackson.

The Michigan Tech hockey team opened its WCHA season with with a crisp 5-1 victory at Ferris State. Alex Petan scored two power-play goals, and freshman Brett Boeing had four assists. Jamie Phillips stopped 31 shots in goal. The Huskies play at Big Rapids again tonight.

The MTU soccer team lost at Grand Valley State 7-0 Friday night. The Huskies play at Ferris State tomorrow.

The Huskies volleyball team opened the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover in Aurora, Illinois, with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-17) victory over Ohio Valley Friday afternoon. Friday evening, Tech lost a nailbiter to Lewis 3-2 (26-24, 21-25, 22-25, 25-21, 16-14). MTU will face Wisconsin-Parkside this afternoon.

The Tech women’s tennis team defeated Lake Superior State 7-2 Friday morning.

The unbeaten MTU football team plays at Grand Valley State tonight.

Robbie Payne’s hat trick powered the Northern Michigan University hockey team to a 6-3 victory over Lake Superior State Friday night in Marquette. The Cappo Cup series continues tonight at Sault Ste. Marie.

The Finlandia University volleyball team lost 3-0 (11-25, 1-25, 17-25) at Maranatha Baptist University Friday night.

The Finlandia football team plays at Buffalo State this afternoon.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team visits Robert Morris-Springfield today, and Fontbonne University tomorrow afternoon. The women’s soccer team visits Alverno College tomorrow afternoon.

The Detroit Red Wings will suffered their first loss of the season Friday night, falling 5-3 to the Carolina Hurricanes. Jimmy Howard took the loss in net. The Wings skate at Montreal tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons continue their exhibition season tomorrow afternoon at San Antonio.

MLB
The Kansas City Royals opened the American League Championship series with a 5-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Friday night. Game two of that best-of-seven set will be played this afternoon in Kansas City.

The National League Championship Series opens this evening, when the New York Mets face the Chicago Cubs in New York.

NFL
In the NFL tomorrow, the winless Detroit Lions host the Chicago Bears at 1:00. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The unbeaten Green Bay Packers entertain the San Diego Chargers in a late-afternoon game.
