Kings Advance to Volleyball Semis – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
The Calumet High School volleyball team is headed to Battle Creek. The Copper Kings defeated Traverse City St. Francis 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the state tournament last night in Charlevoix. They will face Bronson in the semifinals tomorrow at 3:45 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. Brown City and Adrian Madison will meet in the other semifinal. The championship match will be played Saturday at noon.

MTU
The MTU volleyball team begins play in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament tonight. The fifth-seeded Huskies play at fourth-seeded Saginaw Valley State.

MTU defensive back Travis Tidwell was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year yesterday. Tidwell led Tech with four interceptions, and was third on the team with 62 total tackles. He led the conference in passes defended per game. L’Anse’s Cody Goldsworthy joined David Walter and Ben Tauchenon the All-GLIAC Second Team. Nick Brajak, Brandon Cowie, Evan Mayer, Alex Sherbinow, Ryan VanGoethem, and Joe Vieau were selected as GLIAC Honorable Mention honorees.

Iron Mountain standout Carson Wonders is one of three players to sign early letters of intent to play college basketball at Northern Michigan University. Wonders is a 6’4″ forward. He averages 25 points per game, and was named to last year’s Upper Peninsula Dream Team. The Wildcats also picked up Anthony Bethea from Muskegon, and Troy Summers from Grayling.

NMU volleyball coach Dominic Yoder resigned yesterday. Yoder led the Wildcats for 10 seasons, including six with at least 20 wins, along with nine GLIAC tournament berths, and three NCAA tournament appearances.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 last night. Detroit was down 3-1 heading into the third period. Goals by Ryan Sproul and Henrik Zetterberg tied the score, but Nikita Kucherov’s second goal of the night won it for the Lightning with just over a minute remaining. Sproul’s goal was his first in the NHL. Petr Mrazek stopped 18 shots in goal, and took the loss. The Wings will skate at Washington Friday night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons visit the New York Knicks tonight. Andre Drummond missed yesterday’s practice with a sprained ankle. His availability for tonight’s contest will be a game-time decision. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
