High School Football Playoffs
Calumet’s season will continue, but Lake Linden-Hubbell’s high school football playoff run ended yesterday.
– At Dick Harris Field in Harrison, the host Hornets stung first, as Blayne Fowler ran 68-yards for a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage. Calumet bounced back, after recovering a Harrison fumble on the Hornets’ nine-yard line. Robert Erkkila ran one yard for the Copper Kings’ first touchdown. The two-point conversion put Calumet up 8-7. Erkkila scored on a second one-yard plunge early in the second quarter, to make the score 16-7. Harrison counterpunched, scoring on an 11-yard run by Cameron Sherrick, and taking a 21-16 lead when quarterback Thomas Nunnally raced in from 21-yards out with 4:16 to go in the second quarter. Calumet reclaimed the lead just before halftime. After what appeared to be a lost Calumet fumble at the Harrison 14 yard line, the referees reversed their decision during a time out, and gave the ball back to the Copper Kings. Tyler Loukus hit Kaden Kangas with a 14-yard touchdown pass, and the two-point conversion sent Calumet into the locker room with a 24-21 lead. The second half opened with a long Harrison drive that did not produce any points. Calumet scored the final touchdown of the game in the closing seconds of the third quarter on a 21-yard run by Erkkila. The key play in the drive was a long pass from Loukus to Sam Kariniemi on a third-down and 20 play. An aggressive Calumet defense shut out the Hornets in the second half. Calumet will play at Menominee on Saturday. Kickoff is at 1:00 Central Time, 2:00 Eastern Time. The undefeated Maroons got a scare from Gladwin Saturday, but ultimately won a 69-41 slugfest. – Lake Linden-Hubbell opened its game against Bark River-Harris Saturday when Nick Walli broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run on the Lakes’ first possession. The Broncos responded with a Hunter Messersmith touchdown run on their next possession, and the game stood tied at 6-6 until late in the fourth quarter. With 2:14 to go, Jordan Sodergren’s one-yard quarterback keeper and a two-point conversion gave Bark River-Harris a 14-6 victory. The Lakes end their season with a record of 7-3.
