Keweenaw Classic Volleyball Tourney Opens Today – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball tonight…
– Calumet travels to West Iron County.
– Hancock plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Chassell visits Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
– Jeffers plays at Ontonagon.
– L’Anse journeys to Westwood.
– Baraga entertains Wakefield-Marenisco.
– Ewen-Trout Creek visits Bessemer.

The Hancock cross country team will hold a car wash and can drive Saturday between 10:00 and 2:00 at Dave’s Service. Proceeds will support the team. 

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team plays at Crown College tonight.

GLIAC

Michigan Tech will host its Keweenaw Classic Volleyball Tournament today through Saturday. Action begins this evening, as Northern Michigan University faces the University of Mary at 5:00, and Tech takes on Southwest Minnesota State at 7:00.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers suffered their third straight one-run loss last night, falling to the Kansas City Royals 5-4Detroit took an early lead with three runs in the second inning. Harold Castro hit a two-run double, and Dawel Lugo singled him home. Edwin Jackson gave up two in the fourth and two in the fifth, and took the loss.

The Tigers wrap up that series at Kansas City this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against Glenn Sparkman. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a home set against the Chicago Cubs tonight. Chase Anderson will start against José Quintana.

The Cubs were also off yesterday, and the Cardinals lost, so Chicago now trails Saint Louis by 2.5 games in the National League Central Division, with Milwaukee 6.5 games back.

NFL

The NFL regular season kicks off tonight, as the Green Bay Packers visit the Chicago Bears. 

The Detroit Lions open their regular campaign Sunday at Arizona. Hear all the Lions games again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

Running

The Brody Strong Foundation for Pediatric Brain Cancer Research is hosting a 5K Fun Run/Walk Saturday at the Chassell trails. Registration begins at 7:00 am, and the Run/Walk starts at 10:00. The registration fee is $25.00, and includes a t-shirt.  

Our high school football coverage continues tomorrow, when Houghton entertains L’Anse. The pregame show begins at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
