Kelly’s Grand Slam Lifts Tigers – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

Carson Kelly’s grand slam helped power the Tigers to a 9-2 victory over the Twins last night. Riley Greene fell a double short of hitting for the cycle. Wenceel Pérez and Matt Vierling also homered. Keider Montero gave the pitching staff a boost, working into the seventh, and allowing two runs on six hits.

The Tigers conclude that series at Minnesota this afternoon. Kenta Maeda will start against Bailey Ober. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Christian Yelich’s first-inning solo home run was all the Brewers needed in a 3-0 shutout of the Rockies last night. Colin Rea scattered six hits over seven innings.

The Brewers visit the Rockies again tonight. Tobias Myers will pitch against Cal Quantrill.

Milwaukee has added Joey Ortiz to the injured list, as he deals with neck inflammation. Reliever Enoli Paredes joins him on the sideline, with right forearm tendonitis. Infielder Vinny Capra and hurler Janson Junk have been called up from Nashville.

The Brewers have landed two starters on the National League All-Star team. Outfielder Christian Yelich and catcher William Contreras earned their spots in the final round of fan balloting. Reserves and pitchers will be named Sunday. The All-Star Game will be played July 16th in Arlington, Texas.

College Hockey

Northern Michigan University has added a hockey player. Forward Medrick Bolduc had 45 points in 58 games for El Paso in the NAHL.

NHL

The Red Wings have inked a deal with free agent wing Vladimir Tarasenko. It’s a a two-year contract worth $9.5 million. Tarasenko was a starter for the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers last season. Detroit also traded forward Robby Fabbri and a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick to the Ducks, in exchange for goaltending prospect Gage Alexander.

NBA

The Pistons introduced new head coach J.B. Bickerstaff yesterday. Bickerstaff takes over from Monty Williams, who was fired after the worst season in Detroit history. Bickerstaff was fired by the Cavaliers this spring after four seasons, with playoff appearances in the last two.
