High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet breezed past Gwinn 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-12). Laina Kariniemi had 29 assists, and surpassed the Copper Kings career record formerly held by Terilynne Budreau. Caitlyn Strom had 11 kills, Jackie Kiilunen had eight, and Allie Bjorn and Maddie Torola each had seven. Torola added four aces.
• Houghton blanked Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-13). For the Lakes, Abi Codere and Becca Lyons each had six kills. Payton Goldsworthy recorded 14 assists. Ashlyn Steves had 21 digs.
• Hancock defeated L’Anse 3-0.
• Chassell fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-7). For the Panthers, Kylee Sohlden and Whitney Walitalo each had two kills and Dusty Lippold had 17 digs.

In volleyball tomorrow…
• Houghton competes at the Escanaba Invitational.

In football tonight…
• Calumet entertains Hancock for Homecoming. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. The Homecoming Parade will begin at 6 on Mine Street, and proceeds through town to Agassiz Field. Participants should line up at 5:30.
• Houghton travels to Gladstone. Coverage will start at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Iron Mountain’s game at L’Anse has been canceled.
• Ontonagon plays at Forest Park.

In football tomorrow…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Ironwood for Homecoming at 1:30.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team plays at Wayne State tomorrow.

The Northern Michigan football team visits 16th-ranked Davenport University.

College Volleyball

The MTU volleyball team entertains Purdue Northwest tonight at 6, and Parkside tomorrow at 3.

The NMU volleyball squad will host Parkside tonight, and Purdue Northwest tomorrow.

College Soccer

The Tech soccer team will welcome Northern Michigan tonight at 7.

The NMU men’s team hosts Parkside this afternoon, and Purdue Northwest Sunday.

NHL

William Nylander’s second goal of the night lifted the Maple Leafs to a 4-3 overtime win over the Red Wings. Dominik Shine’s tally with 95 seconds remaining in regulation forced the extra period. Nate Danielson and Jonatan Berggren also scored for Detroit, in a game in which the Wings used mostly minor-leaguers. Alex Lyon took the loss in net, as the Leafs outshot Detroit 38-23.

The Wings will host the Maple Leafs in a preseason contest tomorrow evening. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Former Tigers catcher Eric Haase has become a free agent. Haase was claimed off waivers by the Guardians after Detroit designated him for assignment in August. He didn’t stick in Cleveland, and finished the season with their Triple-A affiliate in Columbus.

Following the Brewers’ early elimination from the playoffs, attention turns to the future of manager Craig Counsell. His contract with the team has expired. Club officials say they’d love to have him continue. He’s also been linked to the Mets, where former Milwaukee executive David Stearns has recently been hired as president of baseball operations.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Bears upended the Commanders 40-20. Justin Fields threw four touchdown passes, and Chicago rushed for 178 yards. The game was played after it was announced that legendary Bears linebacker Dick Butkus had passed away at age 80. Chicago team chairman George McCaskey eulogized Butkus as “the ultimate Bear.”

The Lions host the Panthers in a 1:00 game Sunday on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers visit the Raiders in Monday night’s contest on 99.3 The Lift.
