Francisco Rodriguez gave up two runs in the ninth inning, and the Detroit Tigers fell to the New York Mets 3-1 yesterday. Neil Walker’s two-run homer off the Tigers’ closer spoiled a great outing by Anibal Sanchez, who held the Mets to one run on four hits, and struck out 10 over eight innings. Detroit collected 11 hits, but their only score came on a bases-loaded ground ball by Ian Kinsler in the seventh inning. The Tigers had a chance to take the lead in the eighth inning, but J.D. Martinez was tagged out when he got hung up between third base and home plate to end the inning.
The Tigers open a series at Seattle tonight. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Hisashi Iwakuma. Hear the first pitch at 10:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Cleveland also lost yesterday, so Detroit remains two games behind the Indians in the American League Central Division.
The Arizona Diamondbacks scored three runs in the fourth inning, and five in the fifth, and cruised past the Milwaukee Brewers 9-3 yesterday. Jimmy Nelson didn’t make it through the fifth inning, and was charged with seven of those runs. Jonathan Villar homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers return home, and begin a set against the Braves this evening. Zach Davies will pitch against Rob Whalen.
NFL
Last night’s NFL Hall of Fame Game had to be canceled because of poor field conditions. The Green Bay Packers were supposed to meet the Indianapolis Colts in the first exhibition game of the 2016 season. The contest was called off after officials noticed the paint on the field was becoming rubbery and slippery, presenting a hazard to the players.
