Jokela Passes 1,000 Career Point Mark in Lakes Girls Hoops Win – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
• Houghton outskated the DeWitt Capital City Capitals 7-2. Goals by Noah Kreipke and Grant Schaible gave the Gremlins a 2-0 lead after the first period. Schaible added a second tally in the second period, and Mike Maillette found the net to increase the advantage to 4-1. Third-period goals by Jay Halonen, Cooper Leonard and Jace DeForge put the game away. Maillette and Connor Arko each had three assists. Bryant Lee stopped 18 shots, as the Gremlins remained unbeaten.
• Calumet earned its second win of the season, with a 5-3 victory over Novi. Brandon Boberg gave the Copper Kings a quick lead 33 seconds into the contest. Eric Loukus also scored in the opening stanza, but the Wildcats led 3-2 at the end of the first. That lead held up until early in the third period, when Boberg netted his second of the night on a power play. Ben Anderson scored the eventual game-winner midway through the third, and Boberg completed a hat trick with a late empty-netter. Hunter Touriniemi earned the win in net, as the Copper Kings were outshot 43-40. Hear the game replay here.
• Hancock shut down Brighton 5-1.
• Jeffers fell 6-1 to de la Salle Collegiate at Sault Ste Marie. Cage Osterman scored the Jets’ only goal. Kasen Helminen made 37 saves.

• Hancock got past Ontonagon 60-52.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell stopped Wakefield-Marenisco 50-35.
• L’Anse lost at Watersmeet 79-34.

In girls play last evening…
• Baraga edged Houghton 70-67 in overtime. Eva Gerard of the Gremlins led all scorers with 34 points. Clea Ollanketo added 15, and Danica Ryynanen 10. Makenna Hendrickson paced the Vikings with 25 points. Kara Roberts had 20, and Mia Coronado 18.
• Hancock cruised past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 64-20.
• Jeffers got past Bessemer 57-44. Taylor Heinonen led a balanced Jets attack with 14 points. Brooke Stanislawski scored 22 for the Speedgirls.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell shut down Wakefield-Marenisco 65-32. Emily Jokela scored 30, and became the second Lakes girls player to pass the 1,000 career points milestone. Angela Guisfredi VanWagner scored 1,331 between 2002-2005.
• L’Anse shut down Watersmeet 71-22.

On the girls schedule this afternoon…
• Calumet plays at Gladstone.

In high school swimming…
• Houghton welcomes teams from across the region to the Houghton Splash tournament today.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will play at Davenport University today.

Both Northern hoops teams will play at Grand Valley State.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan hockey teams will face off tonight at 6:07 in Marquette.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Mosinee Papermakers 8-5 last night.

The Calumet Wolverines have the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Ducks tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 7:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons fell to the Warriors 113-109 last night. Cade Cunningham scored 30 for Detroit. Kevin Knox II added 18 off the bench. Steph Curry scored 14 points in the final three minutes to put the game away for Golden State.

The Pistons visit the Nuggets tomorrow night.

NFL

In NFL play today…
• The Steelers visit the Ravens for a 4:30 game.
• The Colts host the Texans in a 8:15 contest.
Both will be broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

Tomorrow…
• The Lions host the Vikings in a 1:00 game, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. Nick Mullins will start at quarterback for the Vikings, with Josh Dobbs as the backup.
• The Packers entertain the Bears in a 4:25 contest. Green Bay would clinch a wild card playoff berth with a victory.
• The Bills visit the Dolphins in the Sunday night contest, broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
