High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
• Hancock and Calumet split their doubleheader. The Copper Kings took the first game 6-2. Levi Kilpela homered, and Alex Tarnowski got the complete-game win on the mound. The Bulldogs claimed the nightcap 7-1.
• Houghton won both of its games against Gwinn by forfeit.
• Jeffers swept Negaunee 7-1 and 2-0. Levi Frahm earned the win in the opener, striking out nine. Frahm and Kyle Heltunen each had two hits. In the second game, Cody Turner allowed just one hit and struck out nine. Simon Rajala homered.
In baseball today…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell visits Jeffers.
• L’Anse welcomes Ontonagon.
• Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Ironwood.
In softball yesterday…
• Houghton swept Hancock 3-1 and 7-3. Grace Brunet tossed a three-hitter in the opening game. Delaney Salmi had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs. Aydra Williamson also had two hits. Brunet also earned the win in the nightcap, and had two hits. Clea Ollenketo scored three runs.

The WestPAC baseball and softball tournaments will both be staged tomorrow in the Copper Country.
In the baseball tourney, Hancock will open against Westwood at 11:00 at the Driving Park. The winner of that game will play Negaunee in one semifinal at 1:00 at the Driving Park. Calumet will face Iron Mountain at 11:00 at Houghton High School. The winner of that contest will take on Houghton in the other semifinal at 1:00 at Houghton High School. The championship game will be played Saturday afternoon at 3:30 at the Houghton High School field.
In the softball tourney, Calumet will open against Ishpeming at 9:00 at the Driving Park. Hancock will play Iron Mountain at 11:00. The winners will play in one semifinal at 1:00 at the Driving Park. Houghton will play Westwood at 9:00 at the Houghton field, and Negaunee will take on Gwinn at 11:00. The winners will meet in the other semifinal at 1:00 at the Houghton field. The championship game will be played at 3:30 at the Driving Park.
Both Houghton track teams placed second in the U.P. Division I regionals at Agassiz Field yesterday.
• Kingsford won the boys event. Calumet finished fourth. For the Gremlins, Luke Hill won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Zack Horsch took the pole vault. Calumet’s Isaac Larson won the 400-meter run.
• Negaunee won the girls meet. Calumet finished fifth. Stella Wickstrom of the Gremlins took the 400-meter run, and Tessa Rautiola claimed the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Caitlyn Strom of the Copper Kings won the long jump.

At the Division III regional at Wakefield…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell won the girls event, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City second, and Ontonagon third. Emily Jokela of the Lakes won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes, and the 300-meter hurdles. Abi Codere of the Lakes took the pole vault. Dollar Bay’s Ashlea Datto won the 100-meter hurdles. From Baraga, Corina Jahfetson won the discus throw, Ellie Delene of the Vikings claimed the high jump, and Kylie Michaelson won the shot put.
• The Lakes finished second to Bessemer in the boys meet, with Dollar Bay third. Gabe Popko of the Lakes won the 110-hurdles, Matthew Jokela claimed the 400-meter run, and Sam Roberts took the pole vault. Joshua Gaunt of the Blue Bolts won the 300-meter hurdles, and Amos Norland claimed the 800-meter run. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta won the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.

• Houghton and Calumet at Negaunee Kiwanis Invitational at the Wawanowin Golf Course – no report.
In golf today, several local teams will compete at Ontonagon.
College Track
Three Michigan Tech runners have earned All-Region honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association. Clayton Sayen and Sam Lange each were honored in the 1500-meter run. It’s the fourth regional award for Sayen, who is a Houghton High School alumnus. Jesse Jacobusse was honored in the 800-meter run.
NBA
The Nuggets outscored the Lakers 108-103 last night. Denver takes a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. The Heat visit the Celtics tonight, with Miami leading the Eastern Conference finals 1-0.
NHL
The Panthers opened the Eastern Conference finals with a 3-2 four-overtime victory over the Hurricanes last night. The Stars visit the Golden Knights to begin the Western Conference finals this evening.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and visit the Nationals tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Jake Irvin. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers also had yesterday off, and open a series at Tampa Bay this evening. Adrian Houser will pitch for the Crew.
