MLB: Tigers Beat Twins in Ninth
J.D. Martinez’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Twins yesterday. The fly ball to center field was just deep enough to enable Torii Hunter to score. Hunter had opened the inning with a single. He advanced to third when Victor Martinez’ fly ball to deep center field was dropped by Oswaldo Arcia. The run made a winner of Joe Nathan… who allowed two hits in the top of the ninth, but worked his way out of the jam. Rick Porcello gave up three runs over seven innings.
The Tigers host the Royals tonight. Justin Verlander will face Jason Vargas. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.
The Tigers brought lefthander Blaine Hardy up from Toledo yesterday, and sent Corey Knebel back down. Manager Brad Ausmus said Knebel needs more work than he can get in the Tigers’ pen. Meanwhile, reliever Ian Krol is nursing a sore shoulder. He’s considered day-to-day.
Brewers Fall to Reds
The Reds scored eight runs over the final two innings, and beat the Brewers 13-4. Marco Estrada gave up three home runs in a five-inning start. Still, Milwaukee trailed by only one until Cincinnati scored five runs against Rob Wooten and Mike Fiers in the eighth inning. Wei-Chung Wang gave up the final three runs in the ninth.
The Brewers open a set against the Diamondbacks tonight. Wily Peralta will start against Brandon McCarthy.
