Jets Shade Red Devils, Advance to Regional Hoops Final – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

Jeffers advanced to the regional basketball final with a narrow 62-60 victory over Ironwood last night. Matthew Schutz led the Jets with 23 points, and Ashton Kunishige added 15. Jeffers will face Stephenson for the regional crown tomorrow night at 7:00 at Negaunee. The Eagles eliminated Watersmeet 50-39 last evening.

The Houghton girls face Frankenmuth in the state quarterfinals today at Gaylord. Tip-off is at 5:00, and our coverage will begin at 4:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech forward Kyle Kukkonen has been named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s All-Rookie Team. Kukkonen was a unanimous choice, after leading the league’s newcomers with 18 goals.

Northern Michigan placed three freshmen on the All-Rookie Team – forward Joey Larson, defenseman Josh Zinger, and goaltender Beni Halasz.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Predators tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons broke their 11-game losing streak with a 117-97 victory over the Pacers last evening. Seven Detroiters reached double figures in scoring, led by Cory Joseph, with 22 points. James Wiseman had 18 points and 14 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Wizards tonight.

MLB

Half of the Tigers lost 9-5 to the Rays yesterday. Spencer Torkelson had two hits. The other half of the team fell to the Orioles 11-7. Akil Baddoo and Ryan Kreidler homered for Detroit. Zach Logue started, and gave up two runs over one inning.

The Tigers face the Red Sox this afternoon. Michael Lorenzen will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers blanked the Reds 8-0. Corbin Burnes allowed just one hit over four innings. Mike Brosseau had three hits.

Milwaukee has today off.

NFL

The Lions have reportedly signed free agent cornerback Cameron Sutton to a three-year, $33 million contract. Sutton was a defensive leader for the Steelers for the past two seasons. Contracts with unrestricted free agents can’t be officially registered until tomorrow.

The Lions have also inked linebacker Alex Anzalone to a new, three-year deal. Reports say it’s worth more than $6 million per season. Anzalone led the team in tackles last season. Defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs and running back Craig Reynolds have also been re-signed.
